Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 5yo was asking about Roman numerals this am (after seeing the chapter headings in Mr. Popper's Penguins) and she asked where "our" numbers came from and I DIDN'T KNOW!
We looked into the encyclopedia a little bit, but I would like to explore this further with some living books. Any suggestions?

Try:
The History of Counting

From Zero to Ten

Is this the kind of thing you're looking for?

Thank you! The History of Counting looks beautiful-I'll have to see if the library has both of those.

Jennifer...ck out livingmath.net
I am going to be doing the
Living Math History Plans with the dc this summer. We have the books and are having a blast reading them. I know I have more of an appreciation for math when I know how and why numbers were used as well as learning the background behind the various mathematical concepts. I love the idea that people are behind the numbers. It is nice to "meet" some of them in our Math History studies!
