I have a "Zo" - the X-20 too. I love it. But, I don't always use it to bake. I use it about once a week for pizza dough. I use it about once a month for hamburger buns. Several times a month for dinner rolls. While I enjoy kneading bread, I don't have the time anymore and it's so wonderful to be able to drop the ingredients in the machine and wind up with perfectly raised dough/bread.
I used to be really good at making homemade bread (drop the ingredients at night - ready in the am) but have been out of the habit for a few months now. When I do bake the bread in the machine, I like the Zo's shape - it comes out looking like a loaf of bread (my friend's has a bread machine and the loaf comes out cylindrical).
I just use the store bought bread flour - so I can't answer how it works with whole wheat/fresh ground wheat.
Two word summary: love it.

Meredith, we have this bread machine and we love it, but we dont use it nearly as often as we should. We've only made bread and pizza dough, but both were wonderful. It made me so happy to have dh come home from work to the house smelling so heavenly!
As Cici said, the shape is great. I want to order this keeper/slicing guide from The Baker's Catlogue to make "maintaining" the loaf more efficient. (Instead of just ripping into it!)
I've never oven baked so I can't compare. I like the idea of oven baking but the reality is, for us, this machine gets homemade bread on the table.

Meredith,
That is the machine I own. I don't think you can beat the Zo's. My last one I had for 10 years and bought the newer one just because it is bigger. I gave my old one to a friend and it still works.
I put the ingredients in the machine the night before on the dough setting. In the morning I pull it out and put the dough into a baking pan and pop it in the oven.
Dawn, I also have the keeper/slicer. I like that a lot! It is nice to have evenly sized pieces of sandwich bread.
Elizabeth said: "Well, in my former life, I was a bread machine . We burned out several machines because rare is the bread machine that can handle all-whole-grain dough for any length of time. The Zojirushi is the best of the bunch. But... you might consider a Bosch mixer which would allow you to knead 4-6 whole grain loaves at a time with very little effort. Then you can bake them in the oven. I used to do it every other day or so. Once you hvae a tried and ture recipe and you're in a rhythm, it's not really a big deal. And the mixer has an awesome blender for smoothies and homemade frappucinos and it can handle enormous quantities of cookie dough and meat loaf and...
Okay pulling this from the previous bread machine thread which I am grateful to Donna for finding would you say that the Bosch Mixer/Blender is worth having as well as the bread machine??
I'm really enamoured with the "Zo" but I am also very interested in the mixing capabilities of the Bosch, oh and then there's the Grain Mill I'm going to need also
Hmm, good thing dh is out of town for a day, I'll have made my orders by then
