I started our official toilet training yesterday. It's had its ups and downs. I was following a bit of "Toilet Training in One Day" method, but completely. And today is day 2. Seems much of the "training" is his awareness of holding it and going to go. I set the timer for reminders. He loves the reward system...which makes me nervous that he's only doing it for the Skittles and Jelly Bellys! 
Ds seemed exhausted last night and today at nap time. He's doing great, but it's tiring, for him and me. At nap time he wanted to wear a diaper...like it was his long long friend. So I let him.
Being my first time, this is hard, emotionally and mentally and physically on mom and dad and child! I am grappling with all these feelings that I'm doing it wrong, I'm not sweet enough, he's not independent enough, he's not making this his own....101 doubts through my head.
How do you moms do it??!!!!!

Don't worry. It will happen!
Ds will eventually use the potty and you will not traumatize him.
All the rest is details!

I know...I keep gettin reminded that you don't see college students in diapers. That's reassuring. But there is so much pressure on the now...too much attention. He did seem to be ready, we were not trying to force it. He'll be 3 soon. BUT...while in the process so many conflicting feelings!!!!

We talked about it. I looked for cues that they were ready (things like regular potty times, set for them by their own internal clocks). Then, at right about Gregory's age (for all but two of them--one was much later and the other was trained by her siblings much earlier), we just gave up diapers (and pants, too) for a couple of days. We hung out at home, without the TV (too distracting), and just got the hang of it. The only reward was a trip to the store to buy undies with characters on them (as in, "Don't pee on Mickey; he doesn't like to get wet). Some of them were dry from Day 1. A couple of them had a couple of accidents. All but one child wore a diaper at night and naps for couple of weeks and then was dry while sleeping too. It was no big deal. Just be sure that he is are being potty-trained and not that he is training you!

Thanks, Elizabeth. I'm worried that the candy might be addictive...but...
As I was sitting here doubting myself, he just woke up. And he ran to put the big boy underwear on and was all enthusiastic to do it again. So thank you, God. A little sign was all I needed....

mine have all trained between 2-2.5yrs. i time that to the nearest summer and spend lots of naked time. i don't know how pple train in a day with a child this age. i think the child needs to feel the urge to pee and see pee coming out to understand potty training and that can't be done with a pullup. so for me, that's the first step. the second is to get a bowel movement in the potty. once those feelings/urges are understood, we just spend some time being naked and my kids pretty much train themselves.

Thanks for all the advice. I just wanted to add a postscript and say ds is doing really well. Sigh of relief -- he really was at the right age. We still are working on nighttime and bms but he's doing fabulous otherwise. Really trained himself, and he's so proud to be a big boy.
