My mum wants us to take some of her blue indigo plant for our yard, but we are wondering when is the safe time to dig up and transplant? It is just blooming now - should we have done it before now or should we wait for after it dies down? Thanks for any advice.

Dawn, I wouldn't transplant it until after it is done blooming. I am not familiar with this particular plant - I am assuming it is perennial? If so it is best to transplant when you cut it back in the fall. I have been known to transplant things in the heat of July but you have to be very careful to be sure you give enough water and maybe even a shot of organic fertilizer.
I am not a by the book gardener - more a trial and error philosophy here. Hope this helps a little.

I read on several sites that blue indigo doesn't like transplanting at all.

However, it still might be worth a try. I wouldn't do it until NEXT spring, long before it tries to bloom. Make sure it can be divided. Some plants cannot.

Sometimes fall transplanting leaves the plant too vulnerable for winter.

Thank you for the advice, Wendi and Sarah. I guess I will wait till next spring.

This plant has been amazing! The seeds came over from Scotland with my great-grandmother and the bush has been "shared" between several family homes. My mum's actually just survived an accidental "weed-whacking" by my dad earlier this spring!
