Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are brand new to nature study and today my girls brought it a flower/weed? long green stem with lots of buds, topped with tiny purple and white blossoms. If someone can help me get an image onto this post, maybe I can find out what it is! I don't even know where to look online to find out.

PS Is there someplace I can go to for Nature Study 101??

could you do a close-up of the blossoms? i was going to suggest lobelia, but i'm not quite sure....

i hope you don't mind, i posted for you on gardenweb (name that plant forum, and a couple of people have suggested linaria (possibly canadensis)

my fieldguide says (of linaria canadensis)

"superficially suggests a small lobelia but note the slender spurs. leaves linear, shining. flowers pale violet, with a 2-humped white palate. dry sandy or acid soil. throughout. april-sept." you can check google images and see if something comes close.

where did your kids find this? some descriptions are by location.

sorry, i've been obsessed with garden-related topics this whole year....

i still think it's some kind of lobelia, based on the picture you have.

Lobelia from USDA.gov

Thank you Janette! I was just going to try and figure out how to do it! it was growing outside our fence. We live on the gulf coast of Mississippi, about 1 mile north of the beach. Spring has just sprung here.

Toadflax. Blue toadflax. Linaria canadensis...my best guess.
