Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I fear them...mostly because I don't know if my son and I are allergic. We've never been stung, and I really don't want to find out if we are.

And I confess, I know little about them. I could use some help...any kind of help.

So, how do we deal with them when we're outside and they keep circling around?

Are they mud daubers, or something else? We have quite a few varieties of wasp here, but mud daubers are the only ones that seem to circle. They are fairly tame and won't bother you, though I admit I really, really don't like having them around. I was stung (by some variety of paper wasp in Louisiana) a few years back and had a mild reaction. I just haven't been able to shake my jumpiness around wasps since then! Sorry I don't have advice about keeping them away. We regularly check the house, play fort, bird feeders to knock down nests. I would love advice on keeping them away too!

I'm glad you called them mud daubers! I've been using that phrase to my dh and he looks like I'm crazy!
They probably are...I'll have to find a site to find out! I fear all of them...

Jenn,

I'm sure you've found a link by now, but thought I'd post this discussion from BugGuide.net (a website that is INCREDIBLE, by the way!): What to do with a dauber.
Iowa State Univ. affirms that keeping them away won't be easy.

And both sites actually use the word "mud dauber"   . Gotta show your hubby...

Some people are prone to stinging. Dh thinks their skin PH just attracts them. Our John (age 7)has been stung like 6 or 7 times from yellowjackets because they land on him and just sting him. This started when he was a year old!

Now when we see them circling HIM we really worry.

I think the best thing to do is relax and keep out of their way.

We have a Bald-Faced Hornet making its nest right outside our sliders! He's huge!

Like your son, Jenn, my youngest has never been stung but he swells up violently from mosquito bites so we were told to be watchful ...

We need to get rid of this guy (actually I learned it's probably a female who sets up the colony and then becomes queen) but would like to preserve the nest somehow ...

This is my least favorite part of summer!
