We will be traveling to Baltimore at the end of July for a consultation at the International Center for Limb Lengthening for our 7 year old daughter. (She was born with a rare bone defect and will likely have surgery this Fall).

Anyway, we will only be there a couple of days this time at the end of July but possibly will be going up there again this Fall for at least 6-8 weeks. So, aside from the tourist-y things I find on-line, do you have some other activities to recommend or books we can read about the area? She loves to read so anything for me and/or her. We're traveling from Texas and I've never been that far North and East.

I live near Baltimore. My #1 recommendation would be to go to Fort McHenry either when it opens or when it closes (it is cooler in the morning; afternoons here are hot and sticky until mid-Sept.) so you can help raise or lower the flag and hear Ranger Vince give his most excellent flag talk. (Call the park to find out when he's working. You don't want to miss the chance to hear the flag talk! He was even featured on Mike Rowe's current show.)

We have a lot of lovely parks in our part of Maryland - and nice ones in the mountains, too, if you feel like driving west for a couple of hours. My county has several that are right by the water. Let me know whether you'll have a car and what kind of activity level your daughter will have post-surgery and I can recommend some. (I believe at least one is wheelchair accessible.)

Fall is a beautiful time here - best weather of the year - so it's a good time to do things like go to the zoo, walk around the Inner Harbor, etc.

If you like wacky and interesting art, the American Visionary Art Museum is a great place! It features art created by people who have never formally studied art, and it's fun to visit. Our regular art museums (Walters, BMA) are great, too, but a child might find the AVAM more appealing.

The Baltimore Basilica (old cathedral) is lovely. It was designed by Benjamin Latrobe, and it's a beautiful worship space.

I'll let others chime in, but I promise you won't run out of things to do here!
