I met a friend for dinner this evening and she spent a bit of time talking about her sister's new baby...who has Down Syndrome...and about her sister's husband, who loves his new daughter...and about her sister's husband's parents, who feel somehow betrayed because the didn't know their new grandchild would be a Down Syndrome baby...and somewhere in the middle of this talk I offered to ask for your prayers. There's a huge backstory and a lot of stuff I don't know, but here's what I do know:
This sweet and feisty little baby girl (she's a ginger!) is surprising her doctors with her muscle tone;
Her mom and her mom's extended family are there to support her 1000%;
Her dad loves her dearly, but he needs a LOT of prayer support, and...
Prayers are needed for some extended family members who somehow think that if they'd known earlier that this precious little girl was a Down Syndrome baby, they'd be able to cope better now. Perhaps so, but this little redheaded charmer is going to charm their socks off, I believe, if only they'll spend time with her!
The bottom line: Your prayers truly matter here. This family needs your prayers on many levels. Most importantly, a sweet and innocent baby who's doing very well on all her health assessments will need your prayers to get through the next few months as her extended family finds ways to cope with her surprise diagnosis and deal with the concept of lifelong care for their new daughter/sister.
Please storm Heaven for this family. I can't share all the details, but I can assure you that your prayers will make an enormous difference. This sweet baby's parents need tons and tons of prayer support. Her medical team needs prayers, too. I know from long experience that our Heavenly Father listens to your prayers and answers them, often in extraordinary ways. Thank you so much for praying for this incredibly important intention!

We will pray, Nancy!
If you feel it appropriate, please share our slideshow of Rose with them. Friends have told me they have passed it along to family and friends and it has had a great impact as far as seeing a child with Downs as a beautiful, sweet life. Maybe if they see our story and how we chose to bring her into our life, it will soften their hearts to the great gift they have been given.
I do think it is a common reaction, though. Somewhere online a gal's blog is dedicated to this same thing, not knowing until birth that her second child had Downs. She is pretty honest and it is hard to read, but time brought conversion and lots of love like it will do for this family.
