For some reason I'm not getting very many results for 8th grade science when I do a search, so I guess I will just ask. I want my dd 14 to do something a little bit different this year for science. We have The Mystery of the Periodic Table, and I'd like to use that for one of her reading books. I was also thinking she would like Archemedes and the Door of Science, too. I am looking at Exploring the World of Physics by John Tiner, and perhaps Matter and Energy by Fliesher. Tiner's book in particular has some good reviews on amazon. Anyone read it?
I was thinking we would study physics the first two quarters and switch to something else for the rest of the year. But what would go well with physics this year? Is there some subject that would naturally compliment it?
We have done lots and lots of natural history, biology, orthinology and plant studies and even astronomy which she loved.

Two things come to mind.
First, chemistry, especially at the molecular level as it shares a bit with physics so you can build on what you did at the beginning of the year.
Second, earth science. With the periodic table and the physics background you can delve into geology, earthquakes, volcanoes, weather, etc.
It all sounds like great fun!

Those sound like good ideas. I can do search to see what fun books and resources people have used.

Life of Fred is wonderful.
You could easily make a booklist around those, especially if you have one of several booklist resources available.
I use these to compile most of lists:

I usually post most of our book lists by grade/child on my blog. At least every other year I have an 8th grader.

I think I'm getting there. I mainly need sources for reading, my 8th grader is a voracious reader and we don't really have time for doing projects. Can only get so much done in a day...
