I have decided that dealing with the FHC prep-program at our church is my opportunity to do this. I am so irritated with so many details, most of which involve the time commitment(s). It probably stems from my utter and complete hatred for CCD when I was a kid; my Mom had already taught me everything, and the other kids weren't very nice. I was truly miserable and had to go once a week for 12 years! I am really struggling with this, especially since I discovered that we will be out of town during the mandatory parent/child retreat, and I'm going to have to go plead my case. I know how active we are as a family with how I try to make faith teaching part of schooling and with the Catholic homeschool group, but that doesn't mean that I should be teaching my kids that we get special treatment. See, I'm making progress! Still, I genuinely need prayers for this. I think being a homeschooler has made me scornful of large institutions' ways of operating.

I think it is very wise of you to have recognized this as a problem. I do think it is a problem many of us homeschoolers have, and it affects the witness we are able to give to others of the true joys and blessings of homeschooling. I think it is a sneaky kind of pride--we think we know better, can teach better, etc. than anyone else. I believe it is very good for both our own souls and as an example to our children to be in situations (such as you are in this CCD class) that require us to peacefully cooperate with others in a humble way. There will be many times in life when our children will need to submit to the authority of a boss, a police officer, etc. They need to see that example, humility as we live it out. I'm not advocating submission to bad catechesis, but I am suggesting that we conform ourselves to authority in acceptable circumstances. It is the easiest and best way to practice and demonstrate humility.
