Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What's on your list of possibilities?

I have a short list going:

1. No fabric shopping during Lent
2. Strict omputer-free time designated daily (for me)
3. Adoration hour: one per week (possibly in lieu of fabric shopping )
4. No complaining... about anything
5. Make and follow through with a weekly meal plan instead of flying by the seat of my pants.

Maybe I should put these in a hat and pick one.

What is on your short list?

Oh, Melinda! I haven't even put away all of my Christmas decorations! But you are right, it is the time to be thinking about these things...

I am so NOT ready to even begin thinking about lent!
According to the old calendar it is already pre-lent! I think???

I am enforcing the no complaining thing this Lent. It is badly needed around here. My plan is to get a roll of quarters for each person, and if someone complains/whines or whatever, s/he takes a quarter out of his/her own roll & puts it in a jar.   I realize this is the negative route of doing something, but we've tried the "turning beans into jelly beans" thing, and it hasn't really worked. The money they lose is forfeited (I will put it in our vacation money jar, but they don't have to know that) and whatever is left is theirs at the end of Lent.

Also signed up for this: the Best Lent Ever from Dynamic Catholic. I hope it's good. It's supposed to give you something for each day to help you be a better Catholic.

eta: I re-read this and realized that a better route will be to give the money to the Ricebowl, so I'm going to do that instead.

Lent To-Do's
I've a collection of spiritual reading and I'm contemplating adding the goal of going through the house and decluttering (it badly needs it).   Hopefully we'll have nice things to give away as a result.

As for Lenten sacrifices aka fasting I'll be abstaining from sweets again    My sweet consumption has been becoming immoderate again so.... this should be an ongoing reminder of lent as I steadfastly resist the stash of sweets given me by my dh.

Melinda- i had never been one to do meal plans. Recently I started doing it and there is no going back. It makes things better for the whole family. Also, if you are not around to make dinner it is less of a problem because there is already a plan for what to make and all the ingredients are in the house. Good luck!

Stephanie, don't feel bad...we just put the Christmas stuff away today.

Another vote here for meal plans. Mine are very simple. I only plan about 3 days at a time (Dancing Daughter's crazy schedule changes frequently). Even so, a plan helps.

Another meal plan tip - keep the cooking part simple, too. I love to cook and really enjoy making things that take a long time, have many steps, etc. - but this is not the season in my life where I can do that. My plans look more like this:

Baked chicken breasts with panko crust, rice or farro pilaf, veg

Chicken enchilada soup (1 pot, uses chicken leftovers)

Pasta with marinara sauce (I make extra sauce to use at lunch time)

----------

Lentil soup

Baked pasta (meat sauce or marinara sauce) and veg

Turkey meat loaf

You get the idea. Healthy, made from scratch. Simple. Not many pots/pans. Easy cleanup.

This Lent I need to focus on internal and external de-cluttering. My home is a mess and I think my interior life is, too. I need to focus on what is good, what is needed, what is life-giving, and free myself from needless items and worries. This is shaping up to be a challenging year on many levels, and my family deserves a better effort from me.

I haven't done too much planning as of yet. Possibly I'll do another break from Zulily. I'm pretty sure I'll do daily Rosary since I absolutely love this new recording I downloaded and for the first time ever find myself connecting with the Rosary.
