Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a good friend who is moving to Challis, Idaho. Is anyone familiar with the area? Any suggestions for a parish with homeschoolers and/or a TLM parish? Any homeschool groups?

Your help would be much appreciated!

Stephanie, I am somewhat familiar with the area having spent a good part of my childhood in southern Idaho. Challis is really small and pretty isolated. It is 2 1/2 to 4 hours to any city of significant size (Missoula MT, Boise, or Idaho Falls - which is where I lived). There is probably not much in the way of homeschool support - let alone Catholic homeschool support. I met a lady from Idaho Falls a couple years ago, who was a Catholic homeschooler, and she said there was hardly anyone there - and it is a much bigger city than Challis. A friend of mine from grade school lives in Salmon (hour away) and was homeschooling, though I haven't been in contact with them for years so don't know if they still are. Their youngest would be in high school even if they were. I think they might have been the only Catholic homeschoolers there at that time.

There is only one parish in Challis. There are a few other parishes in the vicinity (meaning an hour away) but all four of them are part of the same parish network, meaning they have one priest serving all those parishes - which means essentially very little difference between parishes so not much choice.

The only TLM parish (FSSP) that I know of in Idaho (ones that are in communion with Catholic Church anyway) is in Couer d'Alene which is north (6 hours).

This is not currently up-to-date. For example there is no longer an FSSP/diocese Latin Mass in Post Falls (St. George) or Rathdrum, now that the FSSP chapel (St. Joan of Arc) in Coeur d'Alene is established (those two locations are just 10 miles apart). Also, there was for awhile a monthly Latin Mass in Idaho Falls (Holy Rosary) celebrated by a retired priest. That is no longer happening and hasn't been for several years. That would have been the closest to Challlis (2 1/2 hours away).

And in regard to my earlier statement about the parish in Coeur d'Alene being the only one in Idaho that is in communion with the diocese and Rome, that is still accurate. The other Masses listed are SSPX which is still in irregular status with Rome and CMRI which is sedevacantist (believes the seat of Peter is vacant).

On a side-note: I am an Idaho girl. I have a heart for Idaho. I am very hopeful for the diocese with the recent appointment of Bishop Peter Christensen as next Bishop. He will be installed next week. He seems to be a very holy and orthodox bishop.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I've passed them on to her.
