My daughter was recently diagnosed with high cholesterol. Food treats are an important part of the holidays for my kids. I am looking for ideas for low cholesterol Thanksgiving treats. Thanks!

What would you normally serve?

We love seasoned nuts to nibble at Thanksgiving, especially cinnamon pecans or cocoa almonds.

Also hot cocoa made with almond milk is the best! It's very creamy and rich.

A plate with apple slices, clementines and mixed nuts is always devoured while we're waiting for dinner, also.

Jodie-

Well i normally do pies for dessert. We don"t eat much for desserts the rest of the year, so my kids really look forward to it on Thanksgiving and Christmas. But how do you make a decent pie crust without hard fat? Maybe I should just up the fiber content of the rest of the meal ( taking some of Diane's suggestions) and just let it go with the pie.

Well you could do a cobbler over a pie.. as far as pie crust without solid fat.. you can do an oil crust. I haven't but I've seen the recipes so it's possible.

I have a recipe for sugared cranberries that are lovely. But more of a munchie/side than a dessert.

Does she need to stay away from cholesterol and saturated fat? Vegetable shortening has 0 cholesterol and is what my mom always used for a pie crust.

My mom and I have gone completely plant based because of high cholesterol and high blood pressure. I love Happy Herbivore cookbooks. She also has a blog. This is one of the richest, best desserts ever!

On the Happy Herbivore blog she has a dessert section which has a crust recipe. I haven't tried it, but it would be a start.

How old is your daughter? High cholesterol is no fun. Even when I was thin and young mine was too high. I ate a "healthy" diet and worked out a lot, but it wasn't enough. I just make plenty of cholesterol and my body cannot handle consuming more . Going completely plant based has been so much easier that all those years of "moderation". Maybe it's my age and my desire to stay off medication, I don't know. I do know I weigh less than I have since before baby #3. I'm not to where I would like to be but I'm doing much better. I probably won't lose any more until I'm done nursing. I never do .

Good Luck!

Try the almond milk icecream before you buy a large amount. My son can't have dairy, and he eats the almond milk, or even better, the coconut milk icecream but the rest of the kids don't like it at all. (Which is fine because it's pricey!)

You might look into coconut oil for a crust. I have heard so many things about how healthy it is, even regarding cholesterol. I only know a little about it though, so I would research. It's a hard fat so would probably work in pie crust.

I might try this for my dairy free son! Looks yummy! I wonder how it would be in a crust topped with cool whip for a chocolate cream pie? (I know cool whip is probably evil but when it comes to Thanksgiving you do what you gotta do! )

My daughter is 10.

I think I will look at the happy herbivore blog. We already eat very little red meat but I think we can do better with lowering the saturated fat we get from meat.

thanks for all the ideas!

I've a pat-in veggie oil crust recipe that I always use simply because I'm bad at making proper rolled pie crusts. It can't be used for top crusts but it works very well for bottom crusts.

1 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp sugar
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup oil
3 tbsps cold milk

Sift together dry ingredients, beat together wet.
Pour wet over dry and mix until flour is moistened.
Pat firmly over bottom and sides of pie plate and flute edges.

Either fill or pick and bake (425 for 15 mins)

I loved my mother's oil pastry. She would make extra just to bake on a cookie sheet for me to eat plain. Very simple to make. I always increased it by half to make a pie with a top crust so there was plenty to crimp around the edges.

2 c flour
1/2 c oil
1 1/2 tsp salt
5 T. cold water

Pour oil and water in cup. DO NOT STIR. Mix flour with salt in a mixing bowl. Add water and oil to flour mixture. Stir lightly with fork. Half doug and form into 2 balls. Roll out between 2 squares of wax paper. Place in pan. Makes 2 9 inch crust.

Something else you might want to look at.. I've read that soy including most of your vegetable oils.. can cause inflammation that raises blood pressure and such. I'm almost sure that cutting back on that (because my brother in law is allergic to soy) brought my dh's blood pressure down.
