Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What are some ways you feel you have made your home a peaceful place? Some place you and your family would rather be than elsewhere.

1. Eat meals together. (great time of sharing, discussing etc)

2. Be very intentional in scheduling activities - do not fall into the crazy busy trap of the world - constant coming and going and living in the car.

3. Pray as a family as much as possible - especially first thing in the morning, and before bed.

4. Family read alouds - kids are never too old for this.

5. Family movies - chose good movies, popcorn, hot chocolate or rootbear floats

6. Family board games and fun activities - my husband hold a winter olympics (I decline to participate!!) and summer olympics each year. Build up a good set of activities at home if space and budget allow - pool table, table tennis, fussball, bow are arrow targets etc

7. Be hospitable - especially as your children grow older - host teens and friends etc. Try not to be bothered about the size of your house, worry about it not being perfectly neat or decorated etc.

Years ago I read this article called the Singing House - which really inspired me.

But also be realistic - that with a lot of kids and people, there will be inevitable conflict.....it will never be "little house on the prairie" with everyone sitting dutifully around the table saying "yes Ma, yes Pa"!!!!

That is such a lovely article, Marilyn! Thank you for sharing.

In a similar vein to Marilyn's post, my husband and I enjoyed a post from The Art of Manliness this summer about The Importance of Creating a Family Culture and there are some follow up posts about traditions here and here.

Lindsay - I LOVE the articles you linked. I have sent them to my dh too.

We have many traditions and as our kids grow older we see how important they are. Our college dd loves to share our traditions with her friends (eg. she is hoping to visit on the Feast of Saint Nicholas with a bunch of friends).

But I need reminding of the importance of traditions, as sometimes I feel weary, and I don't want to short change our younger group of kids.

In many ways I think I can set the tone of peacefulness in my home. When I feel myself unraveling looking at the picture of Our Lady of the Way on my windowsill above the sink helps me keep my calm.
