Our dd returned to college today. The goodbyes were definitely easier than when she was a freshman last year. She was also working long hours out of the house during the summer, so all the siblings have got used to her being gone. But ...gosh..it surprises me how hard it is for me- not just the goodbyes, but the realization that she has a new life now, that from now on home is somewhere she will pass through momentarily. I am trying not to think of my twin boys leaving in a couple of years....
It is wonderful to see our older kids make good friends and spread their wings. My dd loves her college town and eventually wants to live there. I love this (and the big strong guy friends who unpacked our very overflowing van today...!!!) - but it is still a little painful, and I am glad I still have a just turned 5 year old and many older at home.
Anyone else have kids starting/returning to college this week?

My son returned to college early (he starts back on Monday) and the house feels so empty! He didn't come home last summer, so it was a joy to have him with me (not to mention his help fixing our broken cars!) for two wonderful months.

Our semesters are different here plus as our children are working their way through they go back to work so only ever have a few weeks home a year
So ds returned a month back, dd is home with us taking a sabbatical for this semester. The hardest part of having two at college is it seems the years are running by. Our third child leaves at the end of this year and I can see all the years slipping by so fast, soon they'll all be gone...

Our oldest leaves home in a few more weeks to do an apprenticeship in the south of Germany. I haven't dwelt on what it will be like without her here every day. I just keep thinking about how happy I am for her and excited for her new beginning. Thank God we found a wonderful school and a girl's dorm with Franciscan Sisters where she can live. I can't imagine a more ideal situation for a first step away from home...
Ask me in 3 weeks and I may be crying.

#3ds moves into the dorm, tomorrow, and #2ds moves to school (off-campus apartment) next weekend. Happy for both and a bit sad, especially since #2 will be a 15 hour drive away, for me (Dh can make it in 13 hours.)

Long, long sigh....yes...it’s the week. Oldest, a junior this year, has already moved back in to his apt on campus. Second oldest, a sophomore, is packing as we speak and we’ll make the three hour drive tomorrow morning to move him back onto campus. I, too, have paused this summer several times and thought it just isn’t ever going to be “the same” as it was pre-college. It isn’t a “bad” thing, but it stretches my mama’s heart and gets me on my knees a lot more. I miss having them all here....they don’t seem to miss us as much...but that is a GOOD thing, they are able to mature and do the things they were meant to do.
Some of the hardest scenes are with Lily saying good bye to her guys. That’s hard.
So, as many times before dear Marilyn, I’m right there with you in the trenches.

Taking Emily back tomorrow. The sadness will be tempered by a visit to the hospital on our way to visit our newest niece. And, we all just love being on the TAC campus. So beautiful and peaceful. So, I think it will be a nice day overall.
Grace and I visited the Carmel in Oakland a few weeks ago and she will visit the Benedictines in October. She is just a senior, but this feels like 'college' tours to me. :)

My senior goes back next week. What's really hard to believe is that this is the last year of college (for her, anyway), and that after this, who knows? She might be living and working someplace far away, not even able to come home for a summer . . . so I've really tried to savor this one.

Praying for all you mamas with older children. It must be so difficult. My mom made a comment about my laundry room being filled to the brim all the time ... like she feels sorry for me (she lives alone and only does 2 loads/week). I have to admit that while I do look forward to seeing my kiddos seek out God's path for their lives, the day my laundry room is empty will be a tough one for me. So lots of hugs and prayers to you ladies!
