Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone ever read the 4 volume book called: The Mystical City of God by Venerable Mary Agreda?

Looks very interesting. Would love to know if someone has read these books and if they are appropriate for a family to read together.

I'm not answering directly. I haven't read them. My mother did a long time ago. These are private revelation and definitely approved, but it's not necessarily factual. There are beautiful elements that will expand your personal devotion to the BVM, such as her description of Mary's virginity.

For a house of boys, I think it might be long and will also be harder to sort what is true and what might not be true. To me it is more "personal" reading.

My spiritual director was recommending reading aloud Our Lady of Fatima by William Thomas Walsh, which is very good. Maybe that might be a better option that presents whole reality?

Thanks for responding Jenn.

I didn't want to taint my original post, but I though I remembered many years ago associating these books with a bit of question. We had a Priest give our Parish Mission Days who read extensively from theist books for his talks. Many people were upset by it at the time, but I never fully understood what the issue was about. The books caught my eye in a new Tan advertisement that I got, but I wasn't sure if they were the same books or not. I am now pretty sure they are.

I will check out Our Lady of Fatima!

My inlaws have these books and have always raved about them. Pretty much everyone in their family has read them! I have the abridged copy and have tried to sit down several times to read it. I make it to about page 4 before I fall asleep. Although the same thing happens every time I try to read the Diary of St. Faustina too, unfortunately. Probably has more to do with the fact that I have more than a couple little people, and I'm usually either pregnant or nursing and just plain exhausted . Some day I will get through the books, but I agree with JennGM that it's probably better for personal reading from what I HAVE read in them so far.

Our Lady of Fatima is a great suggestion. I'll have to keep that one in mind for when my crew is a bit older.
