I have been enjoying the works of Fr. Leo Trese lately, and I recently came upon his definition of what prayer really is.

In his book "Human But Holy", Fr. Trese reminds us that prayer is not some type of spiritual SOS that we throw out there to let God know what is going on and how He can help.

God already knows, and has known for all eternity, what is happening right now. There's no news flash we can give Him. So our prayers are really acts of adoration, reaffirming that we love and trust God to help us in all our needs.

Is that not a great way to think of prayer? So often I find myself announcing to God all my troubles as if He might be surprised and even indignant on my behalf- and, of course, ready to get down to work once I tell Him what needs to be done

It's so much more comforting and helpful to stop and remember that God has all the details already and is on the job. Keeping that in mind is helping me to trust more and "rest" more in Him.
