Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just (finally) received my used copy of the out of print book Children of Summer: Henri Fabre's Insects. I have not read it cover to cover, but I have heavily skimmed it, and it is really delightful. It is not a thick book, but it offers a lovely introduction to Henri Fabre the naturalist through the eyes of his youngest son as well as the insects themselves. I think my boys will really like this read!

There is also some opportunities for rabbit trails and some fun references. One chapter in particular was a treat. It began on Shrove Tuesday when they had the village schoolmaster over for dinner and served grilled cossus grub because the Romans considered them a delicacy! Then, at the close of the evening, the two men try to outdo each other in reciting Virgil (in Latin of course) to each other, Virgil being Fabre's favorite poet because he wrote so often about the insect life that Fabre loved!

I can't say the writing itself is amazing, but the story makes up for it.

Apparently the author has many other books in this genre including those about Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Carl Linnaeus: Father of Classification, and Olla Piska: Tales of David Douglas.
