Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was introduced to her story early in my homeschooling by friend and 4 Real member, Gwen (momwise). She lent me the book At the End of the Santa Fe Trail about Sr. Blandina's experiences in the American southwest in the mid to late 1800s. It is a fascinating story. Her work was mainly in Colorado and New Mexico and her story is not well known outside those areas (even inside them). So it was exciting to me to learn that a month ago the Vatican granted permission to open the Sainthood Cause of Servant of God, Sister Blandina Segale. Her cause for beatification was announced by Archbishop Sheehan of Santa Fe in late June.

Press Release- Archdiocese of Santa Fe
News Conference - Archbishop Sheehan

So I want to introduce her to all of you - who may not know of this remarkable sister. Another potential America saint. Here are some resources to learn more about Servant of God Blandina Segale:

From the Treasure Chest of Fun & Fact comics - "Leave the Rest to God" (They Opened the West series) and part 2

Article which provides an overview of her life - "Blandina Segale, Sister of Charity in the Wild West" - written by my brother in law

The book mentioned above - At the End of the Santa Fe Trail by Sr. Blandina Segale

There was a TV series from the 60's that covered stories of the old west. A 1966 episode featured a story of Sr. Blandina - Death Valley Days: The Fastest Nun in the West

Is this the one who told Billy the Kid not to kill the doctor who had refused to treat him and he respected her wishes? My brother is really taken with her story. I should pass this on to him. Thanks Mary!
