We have a long road trip coming up and I am trying to get some ideas for audio. When my olders were younger we went through many good books on CD. Now I have the new set of youngers - but we no longer have a cd player in the van. So I am looking for audio that I can put on an mp3 player and plug into the loudspeakers in the van.
I would love family recommendations and also sites with free audio that you like. I know of Librivox,my Audio School and Lit to Go. Also Books Should be Free. But I would love to know if there are any particular recordings that you enjoy on these free sites.
Also any technical hints I might need for downloading to an MP3 player.
Thanks!

Hi Marilyn,
I dont know how old ur kids are or their interests, but a recording we really enjoyed was put out by Focus on the Family entitled, "Bonhoffer: the Cost o Freedom" WW2, "acted out" by various voices not just read aloud. I was so good-tho probably best suited for 12&up. Whether or not its available on Mp3 i dont know, but you could probably just google it to find out.
We also enjoyed the Louis lamour Chuck Bowdrie recordings, and BBC's entire Lord of the Rings series (that one was for cross-country!) Also many of the tarzan books by edgar rice birroughs are available and really good.
The recordings that seemed to go ovwr best in our group are inevitably the ones that involve a cast of voices/actors rather than just one reader

We have enjoyed various Sherlock Holmes stories on our drives. They were CD, not MP3, but if you can find free recordings of any Sherlock Holmes tales, you'll probably discover you have a captive audience (especially if you have "Sherlock" fans, as I do!).

Marilyn,
Another thing you can do if you have the CDs that you have enjoyed in the past is to rip them onto your computer and put them on the device you will be taking with you.
We have enjoyed Narnia, The Hobbit, The Boxcar Children, and The Cricket in Times Square. The Frances books, Little Bear and the Magic Treehouse books for some lighter listening as well.
May God bless you trip and keep you safe.
Michelle

As Michelle said, you can easily rip Cds to a program like Windows Media Player, and you can even do so with cassettes(it just takes a little more, but can find how to on Google), and then Sync them to your mp3 player.
We do this with library CDs just for the trip and then erase them after we get home, that way we're not "stealing" copyrighted materials, just using them as though we borrowed them from the library just putting them into a format we can actually use on our trip. We even do this at home for dh when he's working on a big project, as he likes to listen to audiobooks/radio dramas to make work more pleasant, and an mp3 player is more portable.
Some of our favorites are:
~The Little House audiobooks on CD, read by Cherry Jones, a great favorite with our kids
~Pollyanna, the Recorded Books version
~ Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea, the Recorded Books version
~ Little Women, Recorded Books version
~ The Swiss Family Robinson, Blackstone Audio version( the guy who reads this one has a delightful accent and does a good job, we love the inclusion of God in this story and the respect the children have for their parents)
~ The Lord of the Rings, the Recorded Books version our six year old son loves to listen to this one
~ there are some Hardy Boys Mysteries on audiobook, depending upon the age of your kiddos, or for others who may be interested, we have enjoyed these when we borrow them from the.library. In fact, dh liked them so much, I have purchased some of them for days and such.
~We also have enjoyed "Bonhoeffer: the Cost of Freedom" mentioned by Kelly, great "radio drama" as Focus on the Family calls them I think. They have others we really like, and have found them a the library, and ended up purchasing them as we liked them so much.
~ Ben Hur, Focus on the Family( I think this one would be okay for a little younger than The Hiding Place or Bonhoeffer)
~ The Hiding Place, Focus on the Family
~ Little Women, Recorded Books
Most of all these listed we have ended up purchasing over time because we have enjoyed them so much from the library. We like the fact that one can rip audiobooks and put them into mp3 players which are much more portable, we even found these awesome little speakers, which family members can take anywhere to listen to an audiobook while working on a project, and it charges via USB cable so it doesn't use tons of batteries like our old speaker did.

You could check with your library to see if they provide Overdrive services--then you can download audio books for the time you need them, but they do not stay on your computer long-term.
On Librivox our kids enjoyed Just So Stories, the Thornton Burgess books, and the Andrew Lang fairy tales (the Yellow Fairy Book, Lilac Fairy Book, etc.). I think there is a treasury of Beatrice Potter too, but it has been some time since I have looked as we decided to get an Audible account a while back.

Another thing we like to download free and listen to are sermons:
Audio Sancto
and
St. Mary's Oratory
Anyone else have a good spot for sermons/homilies? Would love another resource.
