Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

How do you go about finding vacation places/rentals for your family? We'd love to spend a week at the beach this summer (Outer Banks would be great b/c of distance but we're open to other places) and we're having a hard time trying to find a reliable rental. Scams seem to abound on craigslist and we're not having much success on vrbo.com. Are there other sources for finding homes?

I have seen a couple of deals on Groupon getaways...I don't know if they were houses. I was going to suggest VRBO when I saw your topic before I read what you wrote    I did have good luck on there when we went to Deep Creek Lake.

Asking here might help, actually. I'm guessing that someone else here has rented a place in the Banks within the last few years.

Ask your friends and family to inquire at their offices, churches, etc., too.

Once you find a property you're interested in, Google the address and owner's name to see if you can unearth any information. Sometimes people who've been scammed will post information on TripAdvisor or elsewhere.

For the Outer Banks, two great websites are Carolina Designs and Resort Realty. Carolina Designs has a lot of beautiful, HUGE vacation homes which would be great for a large family, but we've found that they are pricier overall than the ones found at Resort Realty.

Not sure where you are - but I HIGHLY recommend Cape Charles on Virginia's Eastern Shore - a quiet family town - empty beach lots of birds (there is a Great Blue Heron there that is my particular buddy!) and wildlife, incredible sunsets. I would be happy to pm you details of a vrbo property that we stay in - we are not going this year and we will really miss it. It is a lovely house, a couple of blocks from the beach. The owner is really nice too. I am always a little wary of vrbo's and this was recommended by other homeschoolers and as a coincidence, our piano teacher also stayed here.

Katherine--thanks for the sites!

I pm'd you.

Hilton Head is lovely - we went there for years. (in fact we are stopping there for a couple of nights this year - but in a hotel using air miles)

BUT - it is so HOT. Also very expensive. And for us a 12 hour drive (whereas Cape Charles is 4-5 hours)

I prefer the beach at HH - but the isolation of Cape Charles.

Also Cape Charles is better for families with little kids - no huge waves like the ocean. I felt safer with younger kids.

We have had a lot of luck renting off of www.vrbo.com. We also get time shares off of ebay, but they probably don't have much in the Outer Banks.
