Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I thought I would be able to 'pace' myself a bit better than this - talking about picture books that I LOVE! I feel the need to mention this one because it is such a 'gem'.

Footprints in the Ash by John Morris & Steven A Austin - The Explosive Story of Mount St. Helens.

It is made up mostly of beautiful photographs - and for most of you ladies it is a part of your own country which must be lovely, maybe it is in your own 'backyard!'. Our family would love to see this mountain, well we have 'Google-Earthed it!'

It covers the whole story of it's 1980 eruption and how it really is a 'gift' from God (I believe it is, the first main eruption was on Pope John Paul's birthday and the second one that carved the canyon was on St Joseph's feast day) in presenting a real-life example of how the great flood could have carved the world as we know it.

Did you know for instance that a canyon a 1/40 the size of the Grand Canyon was carved in a few days by it's unique volcanic/water catastrophe? How the logs in Spirt Lake show how coal is formed very quickly? On and on it goes. This is such a fantastic book for a middle-older child to devour and understand - all through big, glossy pictures & photos and excellent narration.

We use it for pure enjoyment as well as part of our science curriculum. (Also as gifts for friends and family who have a more atheistic/evolutionary outlook!) Dare I say it - I even found a copy of it in my brother-in-law's toilet! (It is that sort of easy read)

I bought this from an AiG bookshop and I have found all their children and child curriculum books to be excellent - I only wish there were more 'Catholic' ones around like these!

Thank you for the recommendation. I still remember the eruption of Mount Saint Helens. I also remember the ash (I should still have some somewhere). Since we were not that close to the mountain, there was a lot of excitement among the children about the eruption and the ash, everywhere. Our teachers and parents did a good job of showing us the reality of an eruption, by having us watch the lava flow. Today, I live next to a city that has evacuation route signs posted, in case Mount Saint Helens erupts again.

On a side note, my sisters and I played school, often. After Mount Saint Helens erupted, I taught my sibling pupils all about the eruption. Thank you, once again!
