I couldn't find really recent topics in my search, but I think I have asked before. this is one thread but from many years ago.
I have a 5 year old PC laptop that is in need of replacement!
My main uses are writing, blogging, graphics design and photos, PDF design, scanning, printing, email, etc. I am very comfortable with Microsoft Office and that for my main layout and email and WP.
I am considering switching to a Mac, MacBook Pro would be my choice, as I do not want a desktop.
Has anyone made the switch? How hard was it? And did require lots of hardware upgrades (printer, scanner, etc?) how long was the leaning curve?
How did you transfer files? Or did you?

The only issues I have ever really had have been with printing. We were never able to use a wireless printer when we changed from PC to Mac. Recently I upgraded my operating system to Maverics and Dell didn't have the drivers to support this--at least not yet.
Besides that I have loved it!

We have never gotten the wireless printing to work, so that's not exactly an issue. I'm just worried I can't use the existing printer.

You would need to check the brand and see if they have drivers that work with the latest Mac operating system.
I mine I just googled Dell & the printer & soft ware drivers. The eventually let me to the Dell page and endless amounts of others peoples conversations about this. However, when I updated it was really soon after Mavericks was released so I hope that they make divers for their new printers, at least.

It's pretty industry standard that if you're working in photography or graphics of any kind, the mac is preferred and used almost exclusively (almost all graphics/photography departments run exclusively on macs). In general, if you are working on anything creative, a mac is more stable and accurate. It renders colors and fonts more true. Honestly, color management is enough for me!
Also, typically with graphic heavy work, a user craves a stable work platform and the ability to work with and between a variety of windows with ease. You get that on a mac. In fact, you can have SOOOOO many different applications and windows open on a mac (really, an embarrassing number if my desktop is any indication ), sliding with ease back and forth between applications...all without compromising the stability. You can have more applications open than you could on a PC.
In terms of Operating System, most (I realize there are probably exceptions, and I can't predict if you would be someone who would disagree) agree across the board that mac's OS is extremely intuitive, especially for the creative user. The OS is graphics based, so it's geared to the visual user.
In general, it's our experience (Rob works with PC at work and mac at home) that you can be running the same app/software on both a PC and a mac, and the mac will offer a smoother creative work experience. Rob says that when he goes to work (and he's running top of the line PC machines there) the PC feels clunky and backwards.

I highly recommend that you make an appt with a "genius" at an Apple store. They can help you with your transfer of files as well as answering specific questions about a mac pro and compatibility with your existing hardware.
For what it's worth, I've been printing wirelessly for years with no issues from my macbook air to various printers. It's grand!
Good luck with your decision, Jenn.

ETA: The current problem that I had with my printer was older printer (2 years) and upgrading to new operating system which wasn't supported by the printer. I am sure a new printer would be fine. I just have gotten around to getting a new one yet.
