Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

as an introduction to Montessori principles?

Is there a particular book on adapting Montessori to the home that you could recommend?

Thanks!

In addition, to the books that were mentioned elsewhere, I have really gotten the most out of Montessori's or E.M. Standing's books. Some titles include The Discovery of the Child, The Secret of Childhood, Maria Montessori: Her Life and Work, The Montessori Method, The Absorbent Mind, and The Child in the Family.

A friend gave me a copy of The Hidden Hinge, by Rosa Covington Packard, a couple of years ago. It is an oop book on Montessori and parenting. I remember really enjoying it. It contained some practical life lists for the home, along with other helpful information.

Sorry, for the double post, but I forgot to mention that Michael Olaf's Joyful Child and Child of the World contain some helpful articles.

Thanks for the tip on Michael Olaf's books, Christine!

Michael Olaf's books are available here at his website. Click on the one you are interested in and you can actually read most (all?) of it online. Also, you can order them both for $10 incl. shipping and handling.

Jen,

I should have mentioned that Michael Olaf's Joyful Child and Child of the World are actually catalogs that include text throughout. I do recommend reading the information, plus the catalog contains a lot of great products that, if you can't afford them, can give you some great ideas for things to use with children. For instance, I buy my wood trays on sale at Michaels. They might not be the same quality, as the ones found in the catalog, but they do the trick.

I remember some of the activities in that catalog I found my kids doing naturally with cardboard boxes and such. I found the BEST trays at a garage sale for 2 bucks...sturdy and my kids couldn't break these if they tried and they are a pretty stained wood too! Heck, I would read through the catalog before going out garage sale hunting....it's like an adult scavenger hunt

The Montessori apparatus can be very helpful, but aren't exclusive to having a Montessori-type education. One of the things that I keep in the back of my head is isolation of difficulty...and hunt around. I often see my toddler doing what I was reading about without my "help"...and without some of the "equipment" That is one of the things I liked that catalog for...I saw something in there and tried to substitute that product with a household item. Like yesterday, my 16mo dd was placing dressing bottles (6 of them ) into and out of a divided box that held them. (we had just gotten a bulk organic foods order by truck and the kids had a ball with the boxes!)

My first reaction was to stop her and put the glass bottles away...but then I took 2 steps back and sat on my hands. Very carefully she would take them out and if they fell over on the floor, put them back upright and continued to empty the box. She would then take them one at a time and fill the box again. She must have done thi s 20 times and then toddled off to find a new challenge...all I could think of was "how cool! I know what this is! She is teaching herself!" And even though "I" thought the environment wasn't right for her doing something like this, she thought it was....

I digress...

But seriously, catalogs, even the Nienhuis catalog are great for pictures ...and for visual learners like me, it does help!
