I just had to share this and since I learned of this book here when looking for ideas for my 9th grade daughter's geography class I wanted to share it with you.
Ok...so for those that have read this book, you might think HOW can this be that a voyage over 50 years ago could possibly benefit my family today in 2013?!
My DD6 has a birth defect that causes one leg to grow slower than the other so at full maturity she could conceivably have a 6-7" difference between her legs. Amputation has long been the standard course of treatment (she has the same condition as Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius who has it in both legs and is a double amputee). However, thanks to a Russian (and not even Russian but SIBERIAN dr...that's how remote he was) he created a device/procedure in the late 50s to grow bone...thereby lengthening the bone using what's now called an Ilazarov device (named after him).
Anyway, as a result of the success of the Kon-Tiki expedition, Thor led several more expeditions. Starting in the 1970s, one of crews paired an Italian man who had an injured (and shortened) leg together with another Russian dr who knew of this new device. While traveling this journey together, the Russian dr. realized he knew who could help this Italian man with this new device. As a result, the Russian method was first introduced to the Western world as a possibility for limb lengthening in Italy in only 1980 when the Italian man went through the procedure! Anyway, it's the EXACT device that gave us hope to save our daughter's leg and not amputate when she was an infant.
I just can't believe the connection between something most people have probably never heard of (an Ilazarov device) and the fact that we chose for my high school daughter to read this book. Anyway, here was an article hat was sent if you wanted to read more about it:
Historic Discoveries meet Modern Technology
So, thanks for sharing in my joy!

I will pass this on to my boys, they have both read the book! The writing of the book isn't the most engaging but the story is AMAZING!!!!!
Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I think my DD would agree. Honestly, I've just enjoyed the book through her written narrations which have been quite interesting.
