Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I recently spent the day in the hospital with heart issues. It really scared me! It boiled down to just stress, but having to chew aspiring and taking several doses of nitro to get my (normally low) blood pressure down to 135 over something so I could leave the hospital helped me make the decision to get serious about some changes! I've been seeing a doctor that is a naturalist (I think that's what to call her! ) Anyway, she has helped me quite a bit. Much less caffeine, healthier food choices (which doesn't mean low fat anything, surprisingly), and some other changes. I haven't lost but a couple of pounds but I feel so much better!
Anyway, one of the things she suggested is that I look into the Mediterranean Diet. Not as a diet to lose weight but as a lifestyle. Does anyone follow this diet? I hear there is wine! Any good books or resources you would recommend?

I find WAPF to be a good resource. Based on what healthy traditional cultures ate.

I've had this book in my cart at Amazon for months but haven't actually ordered it. It should be pretty simple so why do I need a book, KWIM?

I've loosely followed it from time to time. It's pretty simple. Basically you limit red meat and sugar, don't eat a lot of dairy, eat more fish and then lots of vegetables and whole grains. It's a pretty sensible diet and it's satisfying because of the olive oil.

It's probably too high carb for some people. Also it's different from a "real food" diet in the sense that it limits red meat and dairy (even if grassfed). It can definitely be done in a "real food" way though. I'd say that 100 Days of Real Food is probably pretty much the Mediterranean diet if you're familiar with that blog that it seems everyone follows these days. But the really interesting thing about that blog are the posts about what she actually eats. Many of the "real food" and Paleo bloggers make it seem like if you eat real food you can eat however much you want because the ingredients are all good. But Lisa from 100 Days eats small portions and things like meat in moderation which to me just proves that while what you eat is important (not processed or too much sugar, etc), the concept of "moderation" is the real key to sustained weight loss.

Overall I think it's a really sensible diet. I keep getting pulled away from it myself by concerns about grains and then I end up eating too much processed food because I'm stuck in limbo (perfection is the enemy of the good).
