Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What works for you (sometimes at least!) to ward off cold at the 1st symptoms!

I'll go 1st - Tea, airborne, vitamin waters.

DD feels she is fighting off your little brothers cold. With her having a behind the wheel drive time Sunday, plus big brother coming home from college wednesday - I would love to see her fight this off! I know some of these aren't scientific - but tell me what has worked in your house!

Lately we've been using Quantum Super Lysine Plus and Echinacea with Goldenseal (don't take goldenseal for longer than 1 week), because that's what we have on hand. So far no one has been hit with full blown colds or virus after taking these for a couple days. Other ladies here have recommended elderberry in gummies, tincture or syrup form.

We usually make a big batch of chicken soup (chicken, rice, mushrooms, garlic, ginger, cilantro, onion, carrot, celery ~ fresh ingredients if possible, but we've also used canned or dried when fresh isn't on hand). Just ran across a medical article about the benefits of garlic and ginger in fighting colds, viruses and such. We also push OJ (pineapple orange juice goes over better in our household) and/or other citrus. When we haven't had fresh citrus fruit in the house we've used canned mandarin oranges when first coming down with a cold and it seemed to help. We drink lots of tea too! Echinacea Tea by Celestial Seasonings is a favorite~ ds has called it "EekaSheeka Tea" since he was quite young and always ask for it when he's coming down with something ~ great with honey and lemon!

Praying everyone stays/gets healthy and that DDs driving goes well.

Lots and lots of fluids and Vitamin C (or Emerg-C).

Emerg-C and cod liver (3 at every meal, 2, twice a day for the next two days...I buy the cheap ones from walmart and do this on the advice of a chiropractor). When we catch it right away, it almost always knocks the cold out completely and even if we delay a day or two it knocks it down to just a 3 or 4 days and reduces the severity.

The girl in our local coffee shop yesterday, on learning that my son was at home with a cold (we're regulars in this shop, so she noticed someone was missing), recommended colloidal silver. Anyone use this and have an opinion? I just remember reading some article where a person drank too much of it in water and turned permanently blue.

Meanwhile, I need to go get more cod-liver oil. That's been one of our go-to remedies, too.

I forgot to add that we're doing Elderberry gummies to add to our immunity. I also saw that there's a Boiron Homeopathic remedy that I was contemplating buying.

Sally, I'm afraid of the colloidal silver for that very reason. They don't just turn blue, their skin is transparent, like looking at an x-ray. I'm too chicken to try it!

Well, yikes. The coffee-shop girl was talking about how she had cleared up her boyfriend's abscessed tooth, and it did sound pretty miraculous, but I kept wondering (and obviously not asking) whether the side-effect was that he looked like a smurf.

Best way to fight/prevent a sore throat at the first sign of that ominous tingle? Gargle with some cayenne pepper in a shot of water and let as much as you can bear slide down your throat. Works like a charm every single time for my dh and me... we usually do it 2-3 times a day (AT FIRST SIGN OF AN ONCOMING SORE THROAT) and are perfectly fine the next morning.

Otherwise, I start pounding a high quality cod liver oil for general colds.

And I've had great success using essential oils to ward off colds, minimize symptoms, and protect others in the fam from getting ill after one person already is. If I'm not careful, I'll turn everyone off by sounding like a spokesperson for the brand I sell so I will just say PM me if you have questions.
