Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What are the 3 musical groups or solo artist(s) that shaped your childhood?

I was driving some time ago and a song came on that brought me right to childhood. Recently, my mom gave us a dvd of her favorite group (one of the ones below) which again had me thinking of growing up.

It makes me wonder what my kids will think of when they are grown.

For me:

1. Peter, Paul and Mary
2. Eagles
3. Credence Clearwater Revival (still my all-time favorite)

I don't know what this says about me. :) Maybe nothing at all......

It was hard.. I listened to all those you posted. And I also seriously thought of Gene Autry (I have such vivid memories of listening to his Christmas album at my grammy's house)

There is NO WAY I'm sticking to just 3!!!!! And, I'm definitely going to be crossing genres, too! Love being a rule breaker.

In no order, as they pop in my mind...from childhood:

Toto
ELO
BTO
Hall & Oates
Pat Benatar
Chicago
Boston
Styx
Journey
Foreigner
REO Speedwagon
The Boss - Springsteen

Kenny Rogers
Anne Murray
Alabama
George Strait
Crystal Gale
Barbara Mandrell
Willie Nelson
Lee Greenwood

This is hard...I feel like I'm forgetting someone important!!! I know y'all are going to start typing and those memories are going to come flooding back and I'll think - YES! Them, too!!

Love the Eagles and CCR, Erica!!!!!

Where are Mary and Angie to validate my list????? I need validation before someone asks me who ELO and BTO are!!

Fun idea, Erica!

Oh, I totally know your list, Jen! Though I would likely not include all the country artists as country is a more recent addition to our musical repertoire. I loved Anne Murray though...

ELO more than BTO.

Like Jen said, it would be hard to narrow it down to 3. And by childhood do you mean really the childhood year? I would pick different ones for childhood and then for teens/high school.

Childhood
Monkees
Simon and Garfunkel
Glen Campbell

Teens/High school
Journey
Hall & Oates
Foreigner

I stuck with "childhood" hmm because I associate things with places as much as anything.. I probably listed those from age 8 and under.

Electric Light Orchestra? Not sure about BTO?????

I didn't think about music from when I was older - that could be a looooong list like yours, Jen! :)

Now that 80's music is so popular and we hear it in the stores and on the radio, I am quite often saying to my teens, "Oh, I went to that concert." "Went to that one, too." Oh my. I think the only concert my older girls have been to is the Catholic artist Matt Maher!

My short list is music that my parents listened to and played on the guitar. It stirs something in me, I think, maybe even shaped who I am in a small way. But not in the hippies, 70's way one would think! My parents were not into that. :)

Fun!

Oh yeah - would have to include Carpenters for the early 70s influence on my life. MIght drop Simon & Garfunkel to add them...

I was thinking of including Michael Jackson in my teen high school - not that i particularly liked it but it was a HUGE influence on all of us in the late 70s early 80s.

Yeah- what is the deal the 80's music being everywhere, all the time?

Not that I don't love it, but will I be grocery shopping with Phil Collins for all my time on earth??

Can't believe I left Gordon Lightfoot off my list!!!! Very influential for my girlhood!! I have so many memories of my dad playing his guitar and singing Gordon Lightfoot!!

BTO = Bachman Turner Overdrive

You got ELO right though, Erica!

So...if we're sticking with music that is formational or associated with strong memories around age 8 and under...

Gordon Lightfoot
Lettermen (Mom played their records all the time)
The Planets orchestral suite by Gustav Holst

**** I am strongly resisting the urge to list Captain and Tenille ****

I didn't actually discover music 'til I was 14 or so. Before that I just listened to whatever family, cousins, friends, were playing. So a mix of classical, Matt Monro, Perry Como, Pat Boone, some Bee Gees, and some Beatles and Carpenters.

Then when I was 14 (1982) it was EVERYTHING!

Billy Joel
Elton John
Kenny Loggins
Madonna (yikes)
Cyndi Lauper
Duran Duran
Spandau Ballet
Tears for Fears
Hall and Oates
Genesis
Chicago
General Public
Styx
Toto
Manhattan Transfer

Fun thread, Erica!!

I can't stick with just 3, either.

Until age 11, my music listening was shaped by both my older sisters and my parents!:

Frank Sinatra
The Four Seasons
Glen Campbell (My sister LOVED Glen Campbell, and I still remember sitting and watching "The Glen Campbell" show with her, where Glen opened, "Howdy there, I'm Glennnnnn Campbell!"
The Monkees (I also watched "The Monkees!")
Glenn Miller
Andy Williams
Neil Diamond (solely, "Sweet Caroline.")
David Cassidy (yes, I watched "The Partridge Family" too.)
Anything MoTown

(With the exception of The Monkees and David Cassidy I still enjoy listening to the same musicians.)

When I was 10, I was introduced to Elton John's album "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player." That was one of the first album purchases I made on my own, and I listened to it constantly!!!!! I was hooked on anything by Elton John from there all the way through high school.

Aside from Elton, I listened to:
John Denver (HUGE during my 6th grade year!)
The Jackson 5!!!
Stevie Wonder
The Beach Boys
Kenny Rogers (got to see him in concert in Branson as an adult!)
Any song from any musical by Rodger's and Hammerstein
Musical score from Fiddler on the Roof
Queen
REO Speedwagon
Journey (my first concert, ever.)

I clicked on some youtube videos of my oldies, and it is just amazing how hearing a song can take you back!

Oh, Jodie, how could I forget Lawrence Welk? We watched The Lawrence Welk Show all of the time, too! Boy, it sure seems like I watched an awful lot of tv when I was growing up! (We watched "HeeHaw" too! )

Oh we watched HeeHaw too. Talk about fun. Of course I think some of it probably went over my head But even die hard rockers will admit that Roy Clark is quite the musician.

My #5. :)

Top three from teen years would have to be:

1. Depeche Mode
2. Eurasure
3. Flock of Seagulls

Loving your lists. I think they speak to the power of music. How we can just pull these songs/groups off the top of our heads so easily. We let our kids listen to most anything as long as the lyrics are clean. Most everything they like we like, too.

Melinda, seriously, 80's music is everywhere right now!
