Okay ladies. Me again - and thanks so much for your patience with me.
This thread on decorating our homes has me wondering...why do you put crucifixes over your children's beds? Over the doorways? All of the doorways or just the entrances? Do you have these crucifixes blessed? Why/Why not?
I did a preliminary search on EWTN and on Catholic.com, but didn't find an answer there (I'm sure I'm not putting in the correct search terms).
ETA: This topic is intriguing to me because I have this nagging urge to hang a crucifix on our entry way (but which entry? The main? all? The one we use all the time?) and I want to do it correctly and with one that looks nice.

We have crucifixes in all the bedrooms and most other rooms of our house. I haven't ever put them over doors, but I've seen it in other homes. Yes, all of our crucifixes are blessed, since they are sacramentals. (I see that Jenny sent you a link about sacramentals, so I won't go into detail here.)
The reason we have crucifixes visible in almost all the living areas of the house is to remind us of our faith and Christ's presence in our lives and to provide a focal point for prayer.
One interesting effect of having all these crucifixes in the home is that our children noticed them from a really early age. They would point to them and dh and I would say "Jesus". Amazingly, the first word ever spoken by at least 3 of our girls was "Jesus". They would be carried into the family room or their bedroom and look around the walls and point to the crucifix and say "Jeesh" or some other baby rendition of the name of Jesus. It was beautiful!

Something I love about entering a catholic home. You can almost always see these sacrementals placed about the house. Its just a very natural thing, for me. My bedroom growing up had both a crucifix and a special plaque of the Blessed Mother over my bed. I loved the image of the Blessed Mother esp. Its something lacking in my home that we need to correct! We just have few decorations at all.

Hi Cici,
In the book Guiding Your Catholic Preschooler by Kathy Pierce & Lori Rowland the author offers wonderful traditions you can do with your children at night for bedtime prayers. One entails kissing Jesus goodnight on his feet before tucking them in.
We've been doing this for about six months and this has provided unbelievable peace for my littlest ones at night. Going to bed is no longer a battle

My sister, who is Protestant(and an interior designer), used to make critical comments about all our "churchy" decor, though believe me, it's all very tasteful (my mother used to run an antique shop---old habits run deep!). Finally I asked my sister if Jesus would recognize HER home as a Christian one if he were to come to visit, and that I wanted my house to be identifiable as a Catholic and Christian home to anyone who entered. I think it was an "aha" moment for her, because she has never said ANYTHING else to me...in fact, she has given me several beautiful antique statues of Mary and santos!
We have a large, hand-hewn antique crucifix in our main entryway, and crucifixes in each bedroom, as well as the schoolroom, plus our Sacred Heart enthronement in our living room/dining room. Oh yes, and santos here and there, a Mexican Guadalupe, our Kitchen Madonna AND my icon collection! Strangely, though, the effect is not overpowering in the least. Believe it or not, I tend to lean toward minimalism, so everything is pretty understated, but peaceful  .
When we had a big, fancy Viennese party here around New Years, I actually had a gal come to help me decorate. As we gussied things up for this black tie event, I told her that our Sacred Heart image had to "preside" over the party from its spot over the mantle. Surprisingly, even in this Bible belt area where we reside, she (also a Protestant) agreed how nice it looked!
Like abcmommy, I love the feeling of knowing you're in a Catholic home thru the sacramental art.
