Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My oldest son has to write a paper for Comp class. He has chosen to write about stigmata, which should be interesting since it's a public school lol.

We've found a few sources that include St. Francis of Assissi and Padre Pio but haven't found much else. Does anyone know of any other saints or resources about people who had stigmata? Are there any females that have had it?

I appreciate any help...as does my son. lol This quickly becoming my project...how did that happen?!

Thank you.

There is a good book They Bore the Wounds of Christ: The Mystery of the Sacred Stigmata by Mike Freze. You can "Look Inside" and see the list of saints included.

If I remember correctly The Incorruptibles: A Study of the Incorruption of the Bodies of Various Catholic Saints and Beati by Joan Carroll Cruz includes many who are incorrupt and had the stigmata.

A few pious notes I remember on learning about the stigmata. There have been many frauds claiming to have it, and there are those in recent era who try to debunk it. Padre Pio has many hits of those who wrote saying he was doing it to himself from carbolic acid. One of the "proofs" is that he was covering it up with the gloves and his final days in public there was no stigmata on his hands.

The other big discussion is the placement of the stigmata. If science has proven that the nail holes had to be on the wrists, then why do some have it on the palms?

In my discussions and reading, the explanations have been thus:

1) Stigmatas can come and go. Some saints suffered only during certain times, like Holy Week, or would go years with it, and then it would go away. So it's not a like a disease, once you get it it's permanent. That is not a "proof" against it if you don't see it at a certain time.

2) Sometimes the stigmata is no longer visible after death. And there were saints who suffered an "invisible" stigmata -- all the pain, but nothing visible.

I think it is St. Francis that after he died there was no sign of his Stigmata.

3) About the placement of the stigmata, again, this isn't a scientific thing. It depends on the person's personal devotion. If I were to get it, I always thought it was in the wrists, so it would probably be there. But if someone piously believes it's in the palms, that's where it would be.

Anyway, just random thoughts.
