Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi friends,

I had high hopes for my 4th & 6th graders to be able to follow the same plans this year for history, but it's not working very well. What to do??

I don't think I have a good feel for how to launch kids at different levels on the same material. For example, I read things like the plans on Serendipity for "little kids", "middle kids" and "big kids" and I LOVE IT. But don't know how to DO IT. We will be spending a week each on Washington and Franklin soon, and I would like to give this approach a try. Could you all point me in the right direction? How do we dig into Washington TOGETHER but with activities/books/etc. that are appropriate for different levels?

I suspect this might be a big question and not very easy to answer... I'm sorry! Any tips very appreciated!

I like picking interesting things to read aloud that are interesting but written a bit younger than I might otherwise use for older kids.. but then have independent reading at their age levels.. and it's ok if discussions go over the heads of younger ones at times.. just give them lots of time to ask their own questions.. and give older kids the chance to help with the younger kids.. it will reinforce what they're learning while helping the younger ones.

Jodie's approach has worked well for us...but you could also go to your local library and find books on the person/topic you want to cover at both comprehension levels. Your children could read/listen to those books, then work on a project together that relates to the person they have just learned about.

For George Washington, possibilities include documenting a day in the life of your own household - he was a true gentleman farmer, and rode out on his land whenever he could, recording harvests, crop production, etc. for future reference - or figuring out a way to keep Colonials in his army safe and healthy.

To me (science mom who writes), Benjamin Franklin just screams topics...scientific method, experiment design, newspaper reporting, self-publishing, libraries...you could spend a whole year just on him.

History is relatively easy to do together at the age levels you specify...peg most activities to the 6th grade level, and you will likely find that your 4th grader won't need much effort/energy to keep up.
