Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello,
My father died recently.
I am looking for a book that would help my mother at this difficult time. Does anyone know of any that they could recommend please? Something comforting from a biblical or Catholic perspective ...

Prayers for you and your family. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I like CS Lewis's The Problem of Pain. I'm sure there is a specifically Catholic book out there, too.

Olivia, I'm so sorry. I will pray for his repose and for your family.

I love "A Severe Mercy" and "Under the Mercy" by Sheldon Vanauken which includes letters by C. S. Lewis. This is my favorite in really understanding in context how one deals with a loss of a dear spouse.

Another C.S. Lewis book is "A Grief Observed".

Alice von Hildebrand wrote a book "By Grief Defined: Letters to a Widow".

And Father Groeschel has a book "Arise from Darkness
What to Do When Life Doesn't Make Sense".

Peter Kreeft's book on "Heaven" might also be helpful.

Looks like everything I was thinking if has been mentioned. I was going to recommend the C.S. Lewis books as well. My son read Severe Mercy recently and thinks it is fabulous. So I know I need to read that one soon.

Jenn, do you know anything about this Kreeft book? It seems like it would be fitting for this request.

Thank you so much for your suggestions and especially for any prayers. I will have a look at them on Amazon. I've checked the last link: Love is Stronger Than Death.
My feeling is that it's too complicated for my mum though as English is not her first language and she's not really into reading most of the time. I was thinking more along the lines of a book with short quotes that give hope or a passage to read each day for example...
Could any of the other suggestions above be described as easy to read?

Or perhaps a CD with some comforting Catholic/Christian message to help with loss...?

Or perhaps any ideas of a Saint that would be suitable to help deal with loss of a loved one. St Rita comes to mind but she has a book on her already. Is there anyone else? I think a story on a Saint tends to be easier to read. Otherwise I'll have to find some of the above translated into Polish.

Olivia, I am sorry for your and your mother's loss. If reading would be difficult for your mother, you might find prayer or music CDs (or loading an MP3 for her) consoling. When my sil died a few years ago we made a CD of prayerful, comforting songs for my bil and his family.

Some possibilities you might find helpful:

Music written during the artists' time of grief and an article about how the Catholic artist came to write the music and more music by the same artist with reviews that suggest it would be helpful during times of grief or difficulty.

Many people find this Rosary CD consoling in times of trial. This also sounds like it might be helpful.

This CD is also very inspiring and consoling.

This book sounds like it might not be too overwhelming.

I wish I had more time, but hope you find something that helps you and your mother in your time of loss. Praying for you both.

Olivia, I am sorry for your loss.

I think that your mum might find this book helpful - Walk with Me Jesus

Than you for all the suggestions. Walk with Me Jesus - looks like something my Mother would read.

I was also recommended this book:Learning to Walk Alone

Anyone know it?
