So, in planning for Advent, say we wanted to make a Jesse Tree or a display for O Antiphons, but instead of Mom making it in advance, we made it as an art project, how do you organize it?
For example, I have 3 art age children, but if there are 7 O Antiphons, I really don't want to end up with 21 posters/ornaments. Though, I don't think they would all have the desire to do a good quality one every day for so many days, but they might feel left out if they didn't have one to do.

Sorry. Hit post too soon.
Anyway, I'm feeling a little  trying to plan for this. Would I start out on the first day introducing the three first "whatevers" but waiting to display them until the appropriate day? Has anyone come up with a system for this sort of thing?

Nope. No system. Though I must say that 10 paperchains in pink and purple to count down Advent does give my living room an undeniably Advent feel 
I am considering doing a Jesse Tree during Lent (someone else mentioned this). So I am definately interested if anyone else has this figured out when you don't want to (or have the room to) display 10 of each item.

Lindsay, I've been pondering your question.
I'm not sure what kind of crafting you were planning. One idea I hope to do one year is make either salt-dough or sculpey ornaments for the Jesse Tree and/or O antiphons. This is what my mom did.
We got involved in the cutting out, then they were baked.
If you did this approach, each child could have their own ornaments to paint.
With the variety of ages and skills you have (and interest levels) if you had your ornaments done at a certain stage and then everyone comes to craft it might work better?

That sounds fun, Jenn. So you would just do it all at one time in a day?
I guess I was thinking about it in more of a decorating as you go scenario, which might not really work. So, if we colored the O Antiphon coloring sheets and displayed them each day, I'd rather display one for each day, not 3, and I'm not sure my five year old would color 7 sheets, certainly not thoughtfully. I'm probably overthinking this.
I guess I was thinking that any of the "thing a day" activities sounded good to do the activity in preparing the displayed item each day, but then it is only 1 item to make per day.

For me, no matter how I plan it, life gets in the way and all my big plans fall through. Advent is particularly crazy, no matter how much I pare down. We have a birthday in the middle of Advent, and usually travel or family visitors. I'm a minimalist and we have few outside parties, but unexpected stuff happens. And just Christmas prep is busy...and the boys are hyper (like they are now awaiting Halloween. This has been ONE crazy week!).
I know that if I plan do something every day or even every other day in Advent or Lent we have gaps. And if I think I'm going to have a craft to make it happen for that day, I know it won't work.
Sounds pessimistic, I know, but I think it more realistic for my life. So, simply, I would make all the crafts before the project, unless there are final touches like a little glitter, little glue, little dab of paint that don't require much prep and not TOO much clean-up.

Life is supposed to be in order??? who knew?
It's pre-Advent that I am so very busy so it can take until the second week of Advent before I get my act together if it's anything complicated. I'm finding things that just don't take much prep and will let me just dive in as soon as I have a moment to breathe.
It doesn't involve crafts. Anything more complex than the purple and pink paperchains.. and it won't happen. I really like the paper chains because if we're late.. we just make fewer links

I really just thought about printing out Michelle's O Antiphon coloring sheets on vellum at half size and have them displayed in the panes on the french door, so I'm NOT very ambitious on the craft front. I just thought it might be a more helpful thread to others if I asked the question more broadly.
After reading your responses, I'm thinking it probably makes the most sense to have my boys do them ahead of time as a project to help get ready for Advent or at least prior to our needing to use them. They will probably turn out prettier if I have a cushion and there is no pressure about needing them either in a hurry or on a day they don't feel especially creative.

Personally, I would choose something else for an Advent craft for maybe one day per week; maybe something they can display in their bedroom? That way each child can work at their own level.
As for the Jesse tree: I would consider preparing the ornaments ahead of time. Then as a group,maybe at prayer time, or dinner, whatever; someone reads the relevant scripture and someone hangs the ornament. This makes it much simpler, and therefore, more apt to actually get done in my home!
Lindsey, I like your idea of displaying them on the door. I have the paper ones from last year (incomplete and never hung) that could be displayed on our front door side-lights. Where do you get vellum?

If you have French doors you can display 2 each for every day - stick 'em up back to back. Then you see the same thing on both sides.
