A friend of mine just got back from a parent/teacher conference and was told her daughter is behind in reading. She isn't blending yet. She is 9 weeks into first grade. I told her that she wasn't "behind" and gave her encouraging words and offered to work with her daughter a little. I thought the child wouldn't mind someone different once in awhile to avoid the frustration I expect she will experience because the teacher will likely be pushing her hard. Also, to give the mom a little break and just a different approach. I used CHC program to teach my boys and don't have the materials anymore. It's been to long to remember what we did to work on blending. This family also isn't Catholic. Any ideas on ways to approach tutoring her? Games or activities or what books to read from?

At that age.. I'd do the dolch sight words on flash cards and make up games to play with them. And then find some little books and make flash cards from all the words in those (like the Bob books) and that will help fill in that gap between when the schools think she should be doing something and when it actual develops.

For speech stuff, I do both ba- words and -at type words.. I just use a white board and we do bad and bat and ban and bag etc. or we'll do bat, cat, sat, rat, etc.

The kids like the white board because we'll draw a line under the word when we talk about *sliding* into the next sound. So that as we say the sounds we draw the line and change the sound as we get to each letter.. and then we can draw the line faster and faster..

Oh and I'd do the dolch site words not just because it'll fill in the gap.. but I have one child who can not blend sounds into words.. sight reading all the way with that one.. and the only words we learned by flash cards were the dolch words.. that gave her enough words to morph into all the others (she's one of my best readers, above grade level) but she would have been considered "behind" when she was in K-3rd because she couldn't blend. So if this girlie is one that can't learn with phonics, you're giving her the building blocks that will get her reading even if she's "behind" on blending.
