Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My ds 10 wants to study Asian history. He is primarily interested in Japan.   He is an avid reader looking for historical fiction recommendations. We have found some picture books but he would like some chapter books. (Actually he is looking for any learning recommendations on this subject)
Thx!

One of the books my boys enjoyed about Japan was The Big Wave. It deals with a tsunami, and so it is quite sad. If you can find it at the library (I think most libraries carry it,) I would pre-read, and you can gauge how your son might react.

OH! And a great book was Shipwrecked!!!! This is a true story of how and why Japan closed themselves off from the rest of the world, and why they reopened. A VERY good book!!!

This old thread has lots of ideas for additional resources on Japan specifically.
Japan ideas?
Siince it is a pretty old thread some of the links may no longer be working. Hopefully is has some good resources for you though.

Here are some books from the Newbery Award list:
Shen of the Sea (China)
Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze (China)
Li Lun, Lad of Courage (China)
The House of Sixty Fathers (Japan & China)
Dragonwings (China & America)
Commodore Perry In the Land of the Shogun (Japan)

And Pageant of Chinese History by Elizabeth Seeger is a history book which also is on the Newbery awards list.

Just a note to say if you find old threads with dead links, try web archive to see if you can pull up old copies of links.

We loved the book, The Samurai's Tale by Erik Haugaard. We did it as a rea-aloud when my son was at about the same age, though he could have easily read it himself. Really great story.

Sunny

I've shared some chapter books here on China. We haven't really done any chapter books on Japan.
