Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

warehouse?

I work 3 12 hour shifts a week in a warehouse. I'm in a clerical role but on the floor a lot. Skirts of any kind are not allowed due to having conveyor systems and other equipment around. It hasn't been a huge problem so far. I wear VERY baggy jeans with really really long t-shirts(also baggy). I've had several men say "I can't even tell what your body looks like because your clothes are so baggy." Ugh. Gross. That is the point.

I am now going to a different job within the warehouse. I will still not be allowed to wear skirts/dresses but I will not be able to dress like a bag lady anymore either. I'm not sure what to do. I know that I absolutely need my "backside" completely covered as I will be wearing pants. I just can't think of anything that would work.

Any ideas for modest dress that doesn't involve...dresses?

Properly fitting tunic length tops with a straight leg suit pants style of pants, you can get them in denim or other more dressy fabrics. Remember that being modest does not mean being frumpy and sloppy. Properly fitting clothes that are cut to cover rather than reveal, nice accessories that aren't overdone.. a pretty scarf will draw attention toward your face for instance, do one of the tied around your neck styles and you won't have loose ends that might be dangerous. A nice pair of boots will look great with that style of pants and give you more support and more coverage than a dress shoe.

Here's the visual.. now remember I just looked for the type of items I was thinking of, not prices or such so..

Here are the Trousers

And here is a Tunic

And then a scarf maybe like the top one or maybe like the yellow one when you scroll down Scarves

If boots don't meet your needs, try some nice walking shoes with good supportive soles...I worked in a bus parts warehouse for four years, and an airport parking garage (concrete) before that. Good shoes are a must unless you love midnight Motrin. (Good does not equal expensive...instead, it means nice, stiff soles that really support your feet.)

I bought my first pair of Powerstep orthotics from my podiatrist, but now I buy them on Amazon for $120 less per pair! Seriously, this is not a sales pitch. I have plantar fasciitis and the Powerstep orthotics are much, much cheaper on Amazon, and for me they have worked wonders.

You can't have dangly anything in a warehouse (sometimes this means scarves, other times, it doesn't). Often you need layers because the warehouse spaces are cooler and the adjacent office spaces are not. Sometimes places like Old Navy sell lightweight knit jackets that have blazer styling but are made out of t-shirt fabric; something like that would wash well and offer style, comfort and coverage.

ETA: I'd spend the most money (or bargain hunting time, since time=money) on the top layer above the waist. You can get nice, long, modest t-shirts at Costco or Wal-Mart, and put longer, tunic-style (see above posts) on over them for warmth and for your personal comfort. No one will look at how many times per week you wear denim, black, gray or whatever color pants. Trust me.

Off-topic, but could you please link me to the kind you buy? Thanks!

Power Step Inserts

You need to search for your own shoe size. I don't buy the Pinnacle inserts, only the "original" Power Steps.

There are also knit tunic tops like these that are quite popular now.

I have this cardigan which is quite long and covers the rear. For winter, long open front sweaters are popular now and easy to find. If you splurged on a neutral colored one to coordinate with blouses you already have, you could wear is daily. Sometimes they are called a "boyfriend" cardigan, if that helps you search. Here is another option I saw recently in the catalog, but I imagine you can find less expensive options if you look.

I just ordered some of these scarves for Fall as well. There are lots of ways to ties scarves that are popular right now so that they do no have loose ends.

Oh, wow, Nancy, thank you for that link. I've just developed plantar fascitis, too, and have been at my wits' end.

OK, back to the real topic! Jodie's point is spot on, that modest doesn't mean unflattering, or the equivalent of a burqa. It simply means not calling attention to oneself. Clothing that fits well and flatters without flaunting is modest -- though certainly there's room for interpretation regarding hemlines, necklines, sleeves, and general comfort level. I'd say offhand that any outfit that made you feel comfortable, confident, and attractive without feeling self-conscious or *exposed* would be a modest outfit.

Tunics and slim pants are a great option. I've even done short dresses over skinny jeans with a pair of flats, sandals, or Mary Janes. Like you, I like to have my backside covered, especially with the extra padding of middle age, but I don't want to be swallowed up in my clothes, or unrecognizable as a woman because of them. I really love long, drapey, wrap- or handkerchief-style cardigans -- they can make any outfit look polished and add a warmer layer when you need it. They also add a nice body-skimming effect, covering up but not swamping in fabric.

And yes, black/gray is great as a basic uniform. You can wear the same black pants days in a row, and no one would ever know. I know a lot of people find black depressing, but it does come across as chic, and wearing all-black creates a unified impression that de-emphasizes any particular part of the body. A black tunic or slim long sweater top and pants with a contrasting wrap cardigan or jacket makes a very polished outfit that, again doesn't scream "look at my body!"

Good luck, and happy shopping!

Sally

Well, simple pants and shirt. Really. khaki or black pants with any type of shirt - button down, t shirt, sweater. Wear what you like. Don't hide yourself behind baggie - but with pants you don't have to go baggie or skinny. There are pants out there that are in between that. And to those co-worker males who say they can't tell what you body looks like. . . . Tell them to get their mind out of the gutter! It is also very illegal for them to say such remarks! So say: "get your mind out of the gutter and stop these remarks before I report you and get you fired." A big no-no these days saying sexiest remarks like that!

A quick search brought me to this page:http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=7521&vid=1 &pid=771965032

Then this: http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=751129

I actually never bought clothes at old navy so am not pushing it. I just know regular fit (non skinny) pants are out there. And with a button down shirt can be comfortable and modest too.

Oh - I just looked at the links already mentioned and see they are similar!

I'm a firm believer in the classic khakis and or black pants. Lands end or llbean have slacks that fit but are not overly tight or baggy. I like button down shirts which can be worn tucked or untucked. Layer with cardigans.

Thank you for the great ideas!!

I felt the need to go completely baggy because I was the only female with 150 men...overnights. I needed to completely fade in the background. This will be a little different situation so I feel I can dress better while still being modest.

Thanks again. After 5 years of dressing in what my husband called a "Warehouse Burka", I don't even know if I remember how to shop for cute clothes.

My dh, when we first married got sucked into a lathe, it caught the bottom of the hem of his untucked shirt. It pulled him in, and burned his chest before it ate his shirt and he flew off. It was a terrible accident, but miraculous. So I always made him tuck his shirt in. I also nagged my policeman Dad to always wear his bulletproof vest, which he didn't like to wear because of heat.

All that to say, consider safety first and foremost. Be safe first, be practically modest second. Men will look anyway, they will think anyway. If you practice modesty in your actions they will usually respect that. And The Lord will use you to be salty, your actions witness for Christ when they ask/wonder why you are different.

My dh wears a shop coat when he goes into the shop now, and I so hate this. I'm sure anything you wear is probably safe, but I just wanted to remind you about you being important.

If it wasn't mentioned a wide belt over a buttoned down shirt can be safer and is modest and looks nice too.
