SIGH - does it have to be sooooo hard to find a nice length skirt or dress! She doesn't like the long to the ankles style. The only other thing out there are all mini! DD likes to wear a skirt or dress to church.
Anyone know a store that has decent lengths? Not online because we inevitably end up returning it - she needs an actual store. We can't find ANYTHING!

Try Dress Barn or Cato's. We've had good luck with both. You'll find cute knee length skirts there.

I find it's nearly impossible to find below the knee skirts for any age in the stores.
Do you live in the NYC area? If so, I'd recommend looking for stores in the Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods.
I doubt you'll find much in a mainstream store since the market for below the knee, but not maxi, skirt really doesn't exist right now. I know you said not online but that's probably the best place to find what you want. Here's a link to online stores that cater to Orthodox Jewish teenage girls. Modest Clothing Stores for Jewish Girls I've bought things for myself from Junees and was very impressed. In particular, I love their shells because they can make any blouse or sweater modest.

Lands End has a large selection of below the knee knit skirts right now, andI have one I like from Hanes.com of all places that I really like. I find knit skirts are often very forgiving, so getting a good fit might be easier than a more sized skirt.

Kosher Casuals (online) has a variety of knee-length knit skirts. Here are some of their back-to-school styles.
Their prices are super-reasonable, too.

Isn't it sad that the best place to find modest, affordable clothes are sources that cater to Orthodox Jews or Evangelical Christians? (not that there's anything wrong with using those sources but that it tells us what the market is for modest clothes) It reminds me of when I was looking for a wedding dress and found that the only modest wedding dresses were made for Mormon temple weddings.

You are so right, TryingMyBest, that there are some really icky options out there  , but there really are a NUMBER of mainstream, brick and mortar store options for pretty, modest and current. For example, my daughter and I found some really cute maxi skirts at Target the other day. Perfect! Talbots is a store that has good options, too. Coldwater Creek has nice options, though they are a little pricey. Still, they almost always have some pretty skirts in the shorter length you're looking for, Barb, but still at least knee length. We've had good luck at Kohl's in the past, too.
You can find knee length, mid-calf, ankle and maxi at MANY mainstream brick and mortar stores.
Another option is to see if there is a nicer consignment shop in your town. Often, these will have a really good variety of choices in terms of skirt/dress lengths and styles.
I know Barb's original question excluded online sources, but ebay is a fantastic place to find skirts and dresses because often ebay sales include measurements so you can purchase an item with a good degree of confidence that it will fit. If an item doesn't include measurements, write the seller and ask!

A possible problem that Barb is encountering is location. I live in an area where the big retailers carry smaller lines. Selection is poor and size variety is even worse. Perhaps this is the reason and maybe a road trip to the nearest bigger city would help.

Well, yes - today we had luck at target! Me - I wish she'd like the maxi's - I mean she wouldn't grow out of the length anyway. But - she doesn't like the skirts long. That said we found some that are right above her knee! Combined with a cute top and when its colder leggins and boots!
It is hard! We never have luck online so we stay away from that. Anywhere else has mini-mini skirts (barely past the underwear!). She has black pants but really - likes to put on a dress or skirt on sundays. I was thinking sometime of taking her to talbot and having her try on petites. But most of those are straight - pencil type which she doesn't like.
Anyway - we picked up 2 of the ones today!

Oooo....thank you for sharing the Hanes suggestion! I looked at those cozy skirts and can't wait until this baby is born so I can order a couple!  The prices are great, too!

My suggestion is to look online for the stores that are carrying what you're looking for and then going into the stores to try them out.
Going into stores are simply not an option and over time of trial and occational error, you learn how to judge the skirts that are online.. realizing that the women modeling them are likely close to 6ft tall.. find place that give you actual skirt length in inches.. like we know that skirts that on the models look short (as long as they don't look mini) will be knee length or longer on the short peopel in my house 
Also the flip side for online shopping.. go into stores and try on their clothes to get a feel for how the items are sized.. and then you can go online and purchase items you've tried on or at least with a better idea how those items fit.

Yes, I've just learned that Ann Taylor no longer has Petites in their stores and that they are only available online. Very annoying I'm to the point where I don't go to aimlessly the mall to look for clothing. It's pointless to go to store after store looking for something that isn't there. I check out Target's clothing section because I'm there every week anyway. And if I'm at Target, I might pop into the Kohl's since it's next door. But other than that, I just look online. It's much quicker than wasting my time going to a store and finding out they don't have anything appropriate.

We always at least check online first to see if its worth it. Then we go to the mall. We found it almost impossible to find modest skirts or dresses - if you don't like the full length maxi's (which my dd doesn't). She has black pants to wear to church and 2 skirts that are a bit too short for my taste but not as bad as most kids anyway.

But can you return to the store? If you can, then you just do a google search for a coupon.. if you can get free shipping.. then it's not costing you extra to shop online.
