Anyone else have a 5th grader that is still working on memorizing multiplication tables?

Just need a little encouragement from the idea that we are not alone!

He gets it. Its just not there. Worked on it over the summer (and in 4rth grade of course) and now I decided we take one table at a time and work on it till it is in long term memory for sure! we are on 3's and 4's and almost there. But I think that is what is frustrating me - I always feel he is ALMOST there.

Nope. Not just you. We started with the easy ones first, zeros, ones, twos, fives, tens, elevens. Now we are at 3 and 4's and not quite ready.
Sigh. I am open to ideas to practice them--flashcardlet on the ipad caused major stress this morning. Wrap up worked better. I am going to get a multiplication table to fill out and color as she gets the "families" and when it is all done--Chipotle for us!!!

Oh - I love chipotle!

Anyway - Lately having success with the 3's by him saying and copying them and also repeating just the answers 1st. Today he just got 5x3 wrong. I REALLy want him to get to the point where there isn't hesitation before saying the answer (cause thats when he is thinking for the answer instead of automatic - from memory). This will sound nuts but today I as I asked him the 3's if he got it right and no hesitation - I threw a small stuffed animal at him (we have a ton and he still plays with them). Maybe this silly game took off some sort of pressure. But I may have to be throwing (ok tossing gently) more stuffed animals at him this year!

I am involved in a CCM co-op and among our older kids (ages 10-15), I would say a full half of them still need review for multiplication tables! You're definitely not alone.

Nope...not alone. DS does have some learning issues and I finally "gave up" so to speak. He has a chart that stays in the front of his math binder and I've noticed over the last 1/2 of 6th grade last yr he did have greater recall but I quit doing forced memorization at least a yr or so ago. Of course with a dx of weak memory skills, that helped me feel "off the hook". I guess you can decide if you really need to drill it to kill it or just move forward. I decided to move forward and he can easily complete the math work needed but just needs that extra aid so yes it prob. does take a little more time.

I have been using blank multiplication charts from MathDrills.com for drill and review -- the kind that are a square, with the numbers 1-7 or 1-9 running across and down. Those I find are very helpful. I have the kids do them, then recite the tables (1, 2, and so on) in skip counting fashion -- being able to skip-count quickly by 7s, which we can't quite do yet, will be just about as helpful as instant recall of a fact. They also help you to see patterns, and see quickly where two sets of facts may result in the same answer, as in 3x8 and 4x6.

I also have a lot of multiplication apps on the kids' kindles, and some days we use those as warm-up before whatever lesson we're going to do. On other days, I'll put several problems on the whiteboard -- lately it's been one column addition (because they had forgotten how to do that), one 2-digit-by-1-digit vertical multiplication problem, and one division. Anything to keep us remembering various operations and give our facts knowledge a workout, without just going over 7x8, again. I'll do this regardless of what the actual lesson is going to be about. Just 3 problems, but doing it every day last week, I saw a lot of improvement. So that's definitely going to be a regular in our routine.

Anyway, we soldier on . . . I was terrible at math and hated it all through school, so I'm a little surprised at how much I like teaching it now. I know what motivates me, though: I don't want my kids to flounder the way I did, and I'm willing to take however long it takes to be certain that they *know* the foundational stuff.

As someone said above: why we homeschool, right? :)

I really like Math Bingo app on our iPad. It has really bumped up the speed that our daughter works. We found the app by accident at the Apple Store at our mall. I've tried everything and this has really worked for her because she hates timers and sounds and doesn't like pressure. Well, I don't blame her. But she actually plays the Math Bingo for fun in the car!

My daughter who scored in the 94th percentile for math problem solving and higher maths (she breathes math) also scored in the lowest 20th percentile for instant (8x9 is- and there should be the instant answer, where her answer is after a pause of a few seconds) math fact recall

Mine doesn't either. We use a finger trick for all arithmetic. Addition, counting up from highest number. Subtraction, counting up from the lowest number. Skip counting. it works well. The fluency will come. I have done the flash card, the math minutes, then apps...it's still not there. Not sure why, but I just don't stress on it. When she gets really slow in her work, I make sure she's using the 'tools' I taught her. And it speeds it up.

She does very well on her assignments, it's just not super fast.

Not alone. But, I won a multiplication contest in 3rd grade, so it is a little painful when they don't get it quickly. I think it's all memorization. I knew my 13s too. :)

I used Times Tales from http://www.triggermemorysystem.com
with our boys and it worked really well for the instant/quick recall of facts. I made sure they were ready before introducing it though. By ready I mean, that they understood the concept and could work out the lower times tables by themselves. We also worked out single digit multiplication using the montessori multiplication board.

Once I figured they had understood what the process and the mathematical operation involved, then I just went through the Times tales book with them. It was fairly painless and pretty quick - though my younger son did grumble about the single sentence story line :)
