Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My husband has been off work for about a month due to a surgery. Now that he is feeling a lot better, he has been helping a lot with school. I love this and now he is better able to give his opinion on what we are doing.

He is very concerned about spelling. My oldest is in 2nd grade. We are doing copywork in manuscript and learning cursive letters as well. I am not doing anything for spelling. My husband is a terrible speller and he is really concerned, especially since today my son was writing something and couldn't spell "corn" or "deer." I completely understand his concern. This way of doing language arts is very much a leap of faith and we have absolutely no proof (in our family) that it works. I explained the CM way of copywork and dictation and he seemed OK with that, but he still was concerned that I don't make John Paul write enough. He does writing every day in Latin, copywork and/or handwriting, and English. Everything else, we do orally.

I would love some advice. Should I add something for spelling? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

What about a program like the Writing Road to Reading, or Spell to Write and Read? I know they are not strictly CM, but I feel that they really give students a rock solid foundation in understanding the rules of spelling. I was always a natural speller and never had trouble, but as I use SWR with my own kids my understanding has deepened and I can begin to understand the why behind certain things and not just the how.

I def. wouldn't ADD anything, but you could SWITCH to something else.

HOWEVER.....one of the things that leads to "craziness" or "burnout" or "frustration" in these language arts areas is people adding to copywork / narration in the early years. IT"S TOO MUCH for this age. It's totally redundant to ADD a program to copywork, etc. Now, SWITCH....fine...but don't expect a 7 yo to to Writing Road to Reading AND copywork. It's totally not nec. and chances are will lead a child to start dreading any seat work b/c they know it's never-ending.

***********************

Instead of changing programs.....what about examining how strongly YOU feel about what you're doing? If you feel strongly that the CM-Language Arts is right for you/your family, then give your husband some really great links to a couple of those blog-articles or CM articles that convinced YOU that this was the way to go.

Now, of course, he's not going to be reading 10 million articles about it like YOU did, but find the best of the best, the links/articles that give the WHOLE PICTURE and explain WHY/HOW this works. He probably thinks you're off your rocker because he doesn't understand the big picture and the philosophy behind WHY or HOW this works. And, rightfully so.   Especially since he is a horrible speller himself...he's going to be extra sensitive to this particular aspect of your child's education. So, your job is to explain this to him (via well-written articles/blog links/CM's own words.... so THEN he can make an educated decision about it. Him just hearing it from your mouth probably isn't as comprehensive as it needs to be in his mind.

I certainly wouldn't look to switching ANYTHING until this reading/learning/understanding happened on my husband's part.

Once my husband learned about the big picture and understood, he thought it was totally amazing that you could raise literate children doing things that are so "natural".

Love Lindafay's recent post "How I raised a professional writer without a composition program". This is not addressing the technical/language arts aspects like you're talking about....but it's a great OVERVIEW article. Give him big-picture articles like this one that focus more on spelling/grammar/etc.

Totally wise advice!! And I've been guilty of doing this over the years.
