Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello, ladies! I'm looking for some input on beginning with written narrations. Mostly I want to know:

- When did you start with written narrations with your children?

- How did you go about it? Did you find you had to use a lot shorter selection of reading for a written narration versus what that child was capable for doing an oral narration?

- What were your child's first few written narrations like?

- Do you have any favorite resources for helping with written narrations?

Thanks!

Well this is what *I* do and I make no claims to how well it conforms to so called expert expectation, but it seems to work for us.

3rd to 5th grade

They need to be narrating in summary form before they start writing it.

Iow, if I ask them to tell me in a few sentences what the story was about, can they pick out the major points of the story?

I copy down what they narrated to me.

Then they copy it.

We progress from that to me dictating it to them.

ETA: I do copywork and verbal narrations up to that point. It seems especially true for boys that they need to develop the motor skills required of copywork before moving to written narrations. once that seems to be fairly easy for them, I move to written narrations.

Oh, that is an interesting way to do it. I never thought writing it for them and then having them copy it. That would get past the hand to paper problem. My oldest is good at copywork and good enough at narrations but his hand is too slow for his brain, I think. He can't keep up with writing his own thoughts. Thanks, Martha!
