Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I used Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons with the oldest two. DS is a fluent, avid reader. DD is not.
I just don't want to use that yellow book again.

I have almost 6 year old twin girls starting Kindergarten this year. They know all their letters and sounds (thank you very much Leapfrog!)

I have CHC Little Stories for Little Folks. I am eyeing All about Reading.

I need to be realistic about time involvement, however teaching one child to read takes time, this will just be more.

I should probably just keep and use LSLF since I have it. Wouldn't cost me a dime. But I love the look of AAR and manipulating the tiles...plus it's scripted which is a bonus for me.

Thoughts?

I vote for CHC because it is MUCH cheaper than AAR. I used it with both my boys and it was easy and it did the job. Both boys are strong readers.

I would use the CHC but if you want a bit more that isn't too cost prohibitive you might look at Explode the Code. It's work books but my kids think that's fun. And it would give you some work they can do without you.

Thank you both! Even when you already "know" the answer, sometimes it just helps to hear it from others.

I only use the CHC program and nothing else. It works like a charm. I don't use it before my children are seven, though, because we first lean how to read in German .

I love All About Reading, but it is expensive and Mom-intensive. I've also used The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading

You can also buy flash cards and other add ons to go along with the book at Peace Hill Press

Good luck with your decision!

My first three have used Explode the Code and Bob Books to teach themselves to read, essentially all by themselves with very little help from me other than a willing ear to listen as they sound out words to me. Worked great for us and I don't plan on changing. My biggest involvement is to have great books all over the house, model reading myself and sometimes run my finger under the words as I read the corresponding words in picture books... they tolerate this sometimes, but will ask me to stop on occasion too so they can just enjoy the book... I don't blame them!

Formal reading/phonics programs didn't work for my first son and left us both in frustration and in the disgruntles... so I backed off and haven't looked back.
