My 4 year old came to me this morning and said "Mom - what's on my neck??" So, I look. Well he had a tic embedded into his neck! I live in a rural area and have learned a lot about nature, but you know? I am still a city girl. I freaked out. I sat him on the counter and began (apparently...) to do all the wrong things. I removed it incorrectly, I stored it incorrectly. I called the pediatrician and they wanted to see him and the bug.
They took the bug and will make sure it is lyme free, and said he should be fine.
But what a panic. And this must sound so stupid!
I really just want to break down and cry or go run - and get it out.
This mama is very freaked out at the moment.

I pull ticks of my boys a few times a week!
When we first moved here, I freaked more than a few times. Really. My oldest actually got Lyme 6 years ago when we still lived in the city and never saw ticks, but this, our third summer of nightly tick checks and removals, we've not had an incident, though we are careful to be aware of symptoms.
The good news is that it is rarely the ones you find that cause a problem, and unless you think the tick was there for 36 hours, it is unlikely it spread the spirochettes.

Ah, you'll get used to it. Once you have done it once or twice. I used to bring my dog to the vet to have the occasional tick removed. then, I moved WAY out and had to do it myself. Once I did it a few times, while it is still gross and I don't like it, I can do it. My vet in Va gave me what looks like a teaspoon, made of plastic with a little slit in it which you can slide under the critter and slowly work it out. It helps, most times I never have to touch the thing. My kids seem to catch them before they imbed since they are so sensitive, so luckily I have never had to pull one out of a kid. Whew!! You did great!!
I totally agree I can deal with most of the nature out here, snakes and mice and all, but ticks are just disgusting.

I tried to reply to this for over 24 hours, was the site down yesterday?
He is doing much better. The area he got bit (is that what you call it?) Is still very sore and I can see the spot I pulled it from. Or I could yesterday he is not up yet today.....
Thank you for all the replies. I am glad I am not alone! Yuck bugs! (At least those ones.)

The forums are always closed on Sundays
Dog ticks are grosser, but the teeny deer ticks are scarier since apperently it is the nymphs who are most likely to carry Lyme. We mostly get the teeny deer ticks , but it still gets easier with time. I love God and his creation, but ticks are one oft hose things where I go, "What was God THINKING???"

I guess I must have never tried to log in on a Sunday before....
Thank you for the heads up!
Yes that is what I read too, about the deer ticks. I am really thinking I brought it home either on us, or on the blanket I laid in the grass to read...
There are a few things I wonder what God was thinking when he created them...... Yes tics are high on that list!

Eewwwww...We have been talking about ticks all weekend! Is it something in the air?
One of my girlfriends just told me about a tick she had on her back for three weeks! She said she first thought it was a mole, but when it started getting bigger, fast, she asked her dh to look at it. When he lifted it, and she could see in the mirror what it was, she said she screamed, "It's a TICK!!!!! GET IT OFF ME!!!!!" She cmopletely freaked out, screaming and crying. She is a PA, so every tick-carrying disease was running through her head! She got it to her doc, got an antibiotic, and said there was a spot (not the bulls-eye ring, though) that was sore for a few weeks.
On another "tick" note, I am going to see my doc today, and one of the things I will be asking about is if my later-in-life allergy to beef and pork is due to a tick bite (okay, well, from age 43 to now .) I just read a week ago, about the lone-star tick, that causes this allergy. For all these years, almost seven!, I have been unable to eat beef or pork. It would be so nice to have an answer!
I am glad your ds is doing well, Jill! You are brave in my book!
In Christ,
Stacy in MI
