Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please bear with me, I am still really learning things about the Catholic faith.

I am purchasing my very first Crucifix for our home, do I have it blessed before I put it up above the doorway? And if I only have one in the house thus far, where do I put it? I am thinking the kitchen as that is where I spend the majority of the time, but the living room would be my other thought as that is where the kids play more often. One of my boys is getting one for his birthday next week from his godmother and I plan to put that at the head of his bed.

And my second question is, how does one bless their home?
Thank you for being patient with me.

I think the kitchen is a lovely thought. We have our main family crucifix by the front door. In the bedrooms we have either put them above head of bed or over the doorway.

Their are different house blessings I have seen. The house blessing is generally done by a priest or deacon. Invite him over for dinner and house blessing. I understand that some blessings are written such that a lay person could say the blessing as well - most appropriately the father of the family.

There is also a blessing of the home/doorway with blessed chalk at Epiphany which is a really wonderful custom.

As hubby is still converting I wonder how he would feel about inviting our Priest over and having him bless the house. Hmm... I think I will be inquiring....

I am currently reading True Devotion to Mary by Tan books and they talk about writing a devotion over the doorway to Mary. Then you posted about the chalk blessing. Interesting!

I was looking at the doorway wondering what to write it with... Seems that answer is obvious. Thank you!

Eventually I would like a Crucifix over each door and in each room. Slow baby steps.....
Thank you!

A Crucifix that you hang in your home doesn't need to be blessed, but why miss an opportunity to have a blessed object in your home!
I would drop off the Crucifix at your parish office and ask to have it blessed. Or, if your Priest is very accessible after Mass you could ask him then.

I agree with what MaryM said about having a Priest over for dinner or desert and asking him to Bless your home.

However, if that isn't possible right now you can use some blessed salt and holy water to sprinkle over your home.   In the past I have placed blessed salt over all of the windows and door ways in my home and walked around the perimeter of our yard with blessed salt. You can also do the same with holy water.

An additional idea would be place blessed St. Benedict medals and Miraculous Medals on the ledges of each of the windows and doors in our home as well.

I hope that helps!

P.S. Start small! I think the Crucifix in the Kitchen is a beautiful idea. You will be surprised at the many sacramentals that you will accumulate over time! Learn from my mistakes---Rome wasn't built in a day!

Now someone tells me that it wasn't built in a day...

I don't have any blessed salt - yet. I do have a jar of Holy Water though. I also have atleast one Miraculous Medal as well. I think I will hang that over my bedroom window. Good idea!

I tried to use chalk over the door but the chalk did not work so I used a nice permanent marker. It is ok, my house is around 150 years old. It doesn't matter what it outwardly looks like anymore.
So I decorate as I please. Or feel moved to do.

I await the Crucifix, I just ordered it so it will take a bit to get here I would guess.
