I have recently read a couple of interesting books on homeschooling.
It fascinates me to read how other families set up their school time and their thoughts on what works and what doesn't.
Homeschooling: A Family's Journey This is about a family homeschooling on a single income. The section on applying to colleges was interesting and also a bit scary for me . I enjoyed reading about their take on what makes a good field trip and how traveling enhances education.
Managers of Their Schools
The Maxwell family always leaves me with a lot to think about. This walk through their school philosophy was no exception. I have come away with some great ideas- such as having my dc make personal dictionaries for words they have trouble spelling.
They are not preparing their kids for college but rather to be self-employed. Instead of higher math, they use that school time to have their dc study other subjects, such as computer programming in depth.
Not everyone will like or agree with their ideas, but I always find much to learn from their books. I also appreciate how honest they are about their mistakes. In this book, I like how the dad talks about expecting some curricula not to work out, despite trying to choose the best fit. If that happens, don't beat yourself up- just move on.
Pocketful of Pinecones
I read this last fall and am rereading it now. There are so many good, gentle ideas in this that I am writing them down as I go.
I love how the mother states that she purposes to do what she has set out to do and not be distracted and let school things slide.
I am often a slider, and every time I see something sliding away from our school intent, I think of this book and try to get back on track!

I don't have time to link, but I've been doing some reading lately too.
The Lost Tools of Learning by Dorothy Sayers It was just ninety-nine cents on my nook and was a quick read. I didn't get too much out of it though.
A Little Way of Homeschooling by Suzie Andes (only a couple of chapter in this book) So far I'm scared! I could never be a hard core unschooler! I think a small amount of unschooling is just natural, but . . . . . I think I will continue reading and read the chapter that aren't written by hard core unschoolers.
Finished Haystack Full of Needles by Alice Gunther and I love the ideas, but I have no way to implement this book. I guess being an introvert comes to play in this. I did enjoy reading it though and loved how it was written.
Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum by Laura Berquist although I haven't finished this book yet. I'm interested in the high school portion and may put it away and read it again in a year. I just can't seem to get into it. Homeschooling high school scares me! I thought it was lacking in explaining the classical method at the younger levels. Verdict is still out on the rhetorical stage.
It looks like I've been busy reading! I'm hoping to read some of CM original works over the summer. Of course, this is a goal every summer and never is achieved.

I have been reading Volume 6 of CM (Philosophy of Education) for awhile now. I think I am just constantly going to read this book over and over! It is so full of wisdom.
I have also been reading Poetic Knowledge. It is a wonderful book, especially for anyone teaching young children. It has really given me perspective and everything we do in a CM education fits right in line with this ancient way of thinking about education.

Revisiting Ruth Beechick's books again... I always seem to circle back around to those every couple years. They keep me grounded.

I do love that book- I was just looking at my battered copy and thinking it was time to reread it.
I have also read The Little Way of Homeschooling in the past year... I think the bottom line there is that every family can make learning happen in different ways. Again- it is just so fascinating to read how it all works for different people.
I am going to put CM's volume 6 on my TBR list!
ETA: I recently read (can you tell it's sitting by the pool season? ) A Love That Multiplies by the Duggars. Their daughters recently wrote a book, which my library does not have, but this other title was available, so I took it home.
I hadn't realized all the ups and downs of the birth of their daughter, Josie. I knew she was very premature, but the whole story was inspiring.
As usual, I came away with some nice school tips. I love how they call their memory work "Memory Lane" time. I appreciate the sense of fun and joy that seems to abound in their family

I'm re-reading The Writer's Jungle this summer, gearing up for a focus on writing next year. Also reading a lot of books on writer's notebooks/writer's workshop by Ralph Fletcher. He has some great ideas that I think will mesh well with our Brave Writer-based way of doing things.
