Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please help me decide the best path to take for my ds's 7th grade religion.
My goals for all of my children are that they Know the Catholic faith, Love the Catholic faith, and Live the Catholic faith.
I typically follow a 3 pronged approach - Study of the Saints, Catechism, and Scripture. For Scripture I have, in the past used a Bible History text or we actually read the Gospels or the Book of Acts.
For studies of the saints in the younger years we do a "saint of the day" sort of thing and the older kids read the Vision Books or something similar.
For Catechism we do the Baltismore Catechism, Faith and Life, or a combination.

But! Now I've recently came upon the Didache Church History book and I (think) I really want to incorporate that. But I'm afraid this is all too much for this ds. What would I take out? Maybe study of the Scriptures since we read daily readings as part of our prayer time? The Baltimore Catechism, but keep Faith and Life?

I'm just not sure how to fit it all in. I think it's all so important! Any suggestions?

Could you use the Church History book to replace something you planned for High School? I think there are 4 books in the series and they were intended for HS.

Or if you really wanted to use it now, you could do Church History as your history class rather than religion.

Well in a way the Saints are your Church history. I think at least for a time, for a child who would struggle with adding more "stuff about religion" that I would use the Church History and Catechism. (you'd get scripture in relation to the Catechism and your prayer time and during Mass)

Have you ever looked at My Catholic Faith Delivered? It offers the Didache series online. I have only used it for Theology of the Body for Teens, but my 7 & 9th graders liked it. Also, they email a saint of the week .

That would have been the original plan, Aagot. However, in this house there is always this looming possibility that the kids will go to highschool. Not something I'm thrilled about but my dh feels that, especially for boys, they sometimes need to leave the nest in order to grow up. That being said, neither of us are happy with the religion that is taught at our Catholic HIghschool. So I always have in the back of my head that I want to get as much meat in as i can before they head off for a four year diet of fluff.
Thankfully my dd who will be in 9th next year is staying home. I'm hoping to show dh that these boys of ours can and will grow up while at home. But that's fodder for another thread.

Thanks Jodie, that makes sense.

Thanks Roomintheheart! I checked that out last year but forgot all about it. Do you know how the pacing works? Since, as Aagot pointed out, Didache is a highschool text, I was planning to go pretty slowly with this ds. I think he would enjoy something on line though!

My oldest son is going to public high school this year (first time) and I still had him use My Catholic Faith delivered as his religion class this year (along with religious ed. at our parish), so that is an option, too.

It's a very user friendly site, I can track their progress at any time and see how they're doing. I don't know anything specific about using it for the Didache series, sorry.

Hi, Becky! I'm a bit late to this party , but I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

I agree entirely with Jodie about using Church History in place of your saint material. I think I would consider it to be the whole Catechism class and not do anything else with it. The Didache books are great, but they do cover a lot and each one is a full course all by itself. If you wanted to continue with Scripture (outside of what you hear at Mass), you might just do Scripture one or two days a week. One thing we have done here is just read and narrate a Gospel over the course of a term. Your student could spend 10 minutes reading, and then 10 minutes or so writing a narration or orally narrating material. We alternate Bible and Catechism here on days we don't go to Mass.

Part of that Didache series is Understanding the Scriptures, which is a great book, but very extensive. It would be used over an entire year. You might think about doing Church History one year and then Scripture the next, if you have enough time at home with him.

An alternative idea (that I just thought of ) is to incorporate passages from Church History into your history program where they belong in the chronological scheme. So, if you are reading about the Middle Ages, you'd read the sections from Church History that pertain to that time period. The only trouble with this approach is that it would probably take you more than one year to get through the book, plus there might be some redundancy. However, it could be very instructive to see how the material is presented in a more secular text vs. from the Catholic point of view. If you take this approach, you could continue with regular Catechism study, which might be especially important to do if he is getting ready to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Becky,

We have done the Didache Church History (entire year course not semester series) - I think it is more appropriate for high school. It is great but is really very comprehensive and "information dense"

We have a 2 year Confirmation plan for 7th and 8th grade - and we include Cathechism, Bible, Church History, Saints and Apologetics. I would be happy to email you our plan if you pm me your email.
