I'm hoping to take my boys weekly out to the family farm during our summer break for some much needed outdoor play and nature study. We actually do this a lot, but I need some fresh ideas. Can anyone list some activities that you think my two boys ages 12 and 8 (almost 9) would enjoy? We have access to trails in fields and forest, large pond, small "frog" pond, two creeks, almost 200 acres, and cows (and sometimes goats). We usually just go out and take a hike and always find wonderful discoveries. I'm sure we will continue with this too. I really would love to pack my boys a back pack of supplies and send them off to explore on their own while I sit at the lake and listen to their adventures.

I find that boys that age like any kind of wilderness survival-related activities: build a shelter, make a fire, learn edible, poisonous, medicinal plants, tracking, etc. There are some good books on the subject such as SAS Survival Guide, and one by Bear Grylls that should give ideas.

Thanks Theresa! I could see them building a shelter in the woods. I loved doing that with neighbor kids when I was a kid and we had a few acres to play on. My dad and uncles didn't buy this property until I was an adult. I want to come up with a scavenger hunt too. The word survival gave me some ideas too!

They'd probably have fun doing useful things around the farm too, like walking the fences to check if they are in good repair, fixing fences, cleaning out water troughs, etc.

Try the nature activity cards called 52 Nature Activities. Or take the great Fundanas. There are so many to choose from!! Both products are very popular here in our house and simplify your life tremendously.

The American Boys Handibook is another that might inspire.
