Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have lost so many spoons over the years, its getting a bit ridiculous, so I was looking into replacing them.

Holy moly! Our Oneida "Community" pattern (Clarette) that MIL bought with Betty Crocker points was discontinued in 2006, and a set of six teaspoons is up to $91 on ebay!!! I'm super tempted to collect all our flatware in this patten, put it on ebay, and then buy a new set. I like our set, but while it is sentimental that MIL bought it for us, the pattern isn't anything I'm in love with. I'd just as soon have a bigger set of similar quality in something more common so it costs less. Who knew my kids were leaving $15 spoons lying about in the lawn???

This happened to me a few years ago, too, Lindsay.

I collected all my old pattern flatware in an old Tupperware canister I had and I keep it in the pantry for when we have guests, extra family, etc. It comes in VERY handy in those times!

Then, I just bought a whole new flatware set - two actually - at a really good price in a style I like to keep in the drawer for every day.

I have found spoons everywhere in the house, outside and in the cars. I couldn't get over finding utensils in the bathroom I don't even want to know!

I've just opted for the extrememly mismatched flatware drawer...I think my boys are still to young and I'm afraid to spend money on a nice matching set. I've just bought a small set here and there when I see them and even those disapper like socks .

Jenny's post did remind me of something else I did - we just bought several mismatched spoons (big and little) at the thrift store for a nickel and keep them OUTSIDE in a container. My boys LOVE these - because I can find larger scooper-spoons, little bitty spoons, and ice cream scoops, etc. They make good excavating tools! Boys always want to dig SOMETHING up...and it seems a spoon is the tool of choice. If I keep them stocked in spoons I don't care about, they don't tend to come inside and steal mine.

I haven't found spoons in the bathroom yet. But I did find the sugar container on the counter one time.

Well, I am glad to know I am not alone in the disappearance of spoons! I have a sneaking suspicion some of them get lost when folks (ie. dss!) take food-to-go and then leave the spoons in yogurt containers, which are put back into the paper bag, and then get forgotten and are pitched. So much for saving money by taking your own snack!

I really like the idea of selling what isn't your favorite, and buying new sets!

Our flatware is all mismatched -- about fifteen years ago I started collecting cheap vintage silverplate cutlery and serving pieces, and that's mostly what we use, mixed in with some stainless. I've continued to pick up bits and pieces in thrift stores over the years, so that at this point we have a lot of cutlery!

I have found that it tarnishes really fast in the dishwasher -- we didn't have dishwashers for years and years, and I never thought of this disadvantage to silver. Fortunately I have a son who likes to polish silver, so I let him do it periodically.

I never thought about picking up digging spoons at the thrift store, though! What a good idea.

Sally
