Does anyone pass down 1st Communion dresses from older siblings?
My 2nd daughter will be receiving this May, and I would like to use my older child's dress. Financially, this is pretty much necessary, but also, I am not sure that the way things are made today, if it even would be able to be passed down to their girls. It is a really nice dress that I got an amazing deal on, but even so.
I am a convert and have not had these kinds of traditions growing up, so I am not sure if this is a bad idea for some reason (other than my 2nd maybe expecting something new?) that I cannot see.
We have a sweet baptismal gown from my husband's grandmother that she made, and all my children have been baptized in it and I LOVE that. It is such a special item, and I am thinking similarly with this that it would be neat to pass it on.

Personally, I think using the same dress is lovely! I'm hoping my DD will be able to wear the dress I wore, although she is so tall, I'm not sure it will fit when the time comes. But I don't think there's any reason not to.
Our parish even has a bunch of donated outfits for boys and girls that people can borrow - since often families buy an outfit that they wind up using only the one time. So some kids here will be wearing borrowed clothes.

I think it is a wonderful idea! When I made my First Communion my parents had to borrow a dress from someone my mom worked with because we couldn't afford to buy a dress. I was going to have my boys wear the same suit, but it didn't fit my youngest. My friend had her daughter wear her dress that had been saved all these years.

I made the dress for my girls. I was perfectly willing to make each of them a dress and the GIRLS decided that they wanted to all get to wear the same dress. So far 3 of the 4 have worn it.. and my 4th is looking forward to getting to wear it too.. she's only in K so another 2 years to go for her.
And my son this year is very excited about getting to use the white dinner jacket that my older two boys wore.
I think these kind of things are delightful and are particular to the family and it doesn't really matter what anyone else does.

Absolutely fine to share a FHC dress! All five of my girls will wear the same dress.

3 of my 4 girls will/have worn the same dress. Since #3 and #4 are twins, we needed one additional dress. We were very lucky that the twins were in a wedding, and the dresses they wore were white, so one twins is wearing her flower girl dress. Each girl is allowed to choose a new veil.
Oh and the dress we do have was purchased used off of ebay 4 years ago, so I am not sure how many people wore it before we bought it

I'm glad it helped. I'm late to the party, but we do a "sharing" approach. I don't have girls, but I grew up with 4 sisters and we all but one shared the dress and veil my mother made. It looked a little 1970ish by the time the youngest had her FHC in the 1980s.
Each sister has their own keepsakes. I'm making a capelet for my niece's FHC, and she's wearing some passed down dress.

All my sisters and I used the same dress when we made our FHC, each two years apart. I was actually trying to get my hands on it for my own daughters but no one knows where it is. I figure it's like a baptismal gown. If it's special for your family then it's special for your family. No one else's opinion matters, really.

We even let someone outside the family borrow the dress--we have a lot of boys so it was sitting unused for many years!

Love the tradition of passing down the dress My dd's have all used my FHC veil and I've just found my dh's FHC tie and our last three boys will wear it. (sad I didn't use it for the older boys)

3 of my 4 girls have worn the same dress (the 4th being a twin of the 3rd ;) ). Our next one is a boy, so I plan to offer the dress to my niece who is due to be born in June.

Chiming in late here -
My god-daughter wanted this total medieval princess gown for her first communion dress. So her mother, grandmother and abulita made it for her, it took a month.
My 2nd daughter and 3rd daughter both wore the gown, and then her younger sister did too. By the time all 5 girls wore it (and it was still stunningly beautiful - even though we had added ribbons to tighten it for one of my daughters and gores in the back for her sister) it all most seemed like all the work that went into it was worth it!
We pass 'em on down in our family.
Last year my son, and my friends son both insisted they wanted to wear full 3 piece white suits for their first communion... we are from Texas and in the hispanic culture quite the norm for 1st Communions.
So, the boys are close enough in size (and Communions were 2 weeks apart) we bought one suit, he wore it, she shipped it to me the next day and then my Greg wore it. We are shipping it to another friend for her son to wear this year.
Take one down, pass it around.....
y'all know the song!
God Bless;
Trish
