Any opinions on Ben and Me versus Poor Richard?
It seems from the previews that Ben and Me might be more accessible to a slightly younger child, and it is certainly a less expensive book! They both look good, imo, and my 3rd grader is an advanced reader, so I imagine he would be able to manage Poor Richard. I'm almost certainly planning to use the Daugherty book Of Courage Undaunted next year when we move on to the Westward Expansion.

Two classic authors - I don't think you can go wrong! I regret that I don't have personal knowledge of these two books but have read others by both authors. I think your assessment is on target for the authors. My first thought was - "Advanced reader - do both." But if you have to buy them I see the need to choose (though used copies would help that).

We loved Ben and Me on cd- our library had it. So you could listen to that and have him read the other... maybe?

Ben and Me is a more "fun" book....we have listened to it a couple times book-on-tape. Poor Richard is def. a more MEATY book....one to be read slowly, discussed and savored.
So, in our house.....
Ben and Me is a fun family read or family book-on-tape for everyone.
Poor Richard is a book assigned, read slowly throughout the year, and narrated. Ages 10 +
It is in Ambleside's Year 4, which is "the year" when the books JUMP tremendously....so it's def. a harder book. And, year 4 does NOT mean 4th grade. It's more like 4th-7th grade.
A high-reading-level third grader is going to miss a lot of the content of this book, because of maturity level and just making those "connections."
I would probably save Poor Richard for a few years down the line, and put some more "fun" american history books in front of him to devour.
ALTHOUGH....I would consider it at this young age for a mature reader IF I was reading it aloud WITH him, uninterrupted (meaning no other kiddos around) and discussing it alongside him. I could DEF. see that working. But,  .....unless you have a room full of straight jackets and a wet-nurse up your sleeve, this probably isn't an option...

This is probably late but I wanted to plug Electric Ben, just out last year, as the perfect fit for a 3rd-5th grader. A meaty, wonderful, alive picture book. Highly recommended!

Thanks, ladies! I went with Ben and Me since ds's workload is heavy right now with lots of catch-up here at the end of the year. I figured he'd be less stressed with something lighter. I do think I will keep Poor Richard in mind for 5th or 6th grade for sure!
I will also keep Electric Ben on the list. It looks like a book ds1 would love to read!
