Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Separators are really the most painful part of the routine, aside from specialized appliances like palate expanders. If she's in a lot of pain, Tylenol and Motrin do help a lot. (No aspirin - risk of Reyes Syndrome, which is a serious deal.)

Once she's got the braces on, the only days she'll be uncomfortable are the days she has orthodontist appointments (unless she has a palate expander or something like that).

This is still a good time of year for soups - lentil, pasta e fagioli and chicken noodle are favorites around here. Soups are soft and easy to handle.

Next step up might be either pasta (overcook it a bit) or "breakfast for dinner" pancakes/waffles.

In the "meat and potatoes" category, perhaps you could try meatloaf with mashed potatoes - peas make a good side dish and are pretty soft/mashable.

Smoothies and milkshakes are fun, and you can make them in healthy ways (bananas and other fruit, not just milk and ice cream).

Please tell your daughter that the whole experience is NOT like having the separators. Yes, the ortho tweaks things at intervals, and that day and the next, gums will be tender. But, for the most part, the big difficulty will be staying away from popcorn, sticky candy, hard candy and other no-nos. (Rock candy is out. Trust me!) If this is hard, make plans for a popcorn party when the braces come off.

Also, orthodontists make their projections based on average kids' adherence to their protocols. (Braces will be on for two years, for example.) If your daughter religiously follows the orthodontist's regime, it is likely that her braces will come off a couple of weeks early unless a new discovery (wisdom teeth causing problems, for ex.) is made. Do what they say, and everything will be either on schedule (good) or early (better!!!).

What Nancy said.

I didn't cook special foods for my daughter, but had lots of extra things that she could eat available in the pantry just for her. Usually it was only the first day she would complain or eat less, then she'd be back eating with the rest of the family until the next check up in six weeks or so...

I do make it habit of having smoothies and oatmeal for breakfast on a regular basis...

Just to add on - my son had pain chewing for a full two weeks after braces went on, then he was able to eat more foods. I was surprised the soft food stage lasted so long.
